About this deal

Lovat manager Jamie Matheson will be keen to get off to a good start and he will keep an eye on Scotland forward Greg Matheson who is managing a hamstring injury. He was first and foremost a husband, father, papa and brother and our deepest sympathies go out to Alice, Scott and Kim as well as Alasdair, Joan, Mairi and Ann and the extended family. Donnie was also a great friend to many. It was a third Mowi Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup success for Skye Camanachd as they beat Glasgow Mid Argyll 3-0 in their 4.10pm throw up at the Eilan, Newtonmore on Saturday.

There was still time for Will Cowie to get his second as his low shot from the right screamed into the net to make it 7-0. The Lochaber High School Pipe Band played for the crowd, estimated in excess of 6,000, in the lead up to the 3pm throw up. In-between times, Skye’s Catherine Robertson came on for an injured Ilana Paterson as the final approached the hour. Camanachd Association CEO, Derek Keir added, “Urquhart Castle is steeped in history, much like the sport of shinty and indeed the Sutherland Cup. It seemed a fitting place to take the cup draw ahead of the 100 th anniversary of the first Sutherland Cup Final and our thanks go to Historic Environment Scotland for hosting us, and to Highland Industrial Supplies for making the final possible. However, Col Glen hope 2023 will be a big year for the club as it targets promotion to Mowi South Division 1.

Skye were through to the semi-finals and the headline on John Willie Campbell’s radio report that evening screamed: “Kingussie are out of the Camanachd Cup!” A spokesperson for Skye Camanachd added: “There is no one individual who has made a bigger contribution to Skye Camanachd over that last 50 years than Donnie. Skye’s Caitlin Maclean was named player of the match and she was presented with the salver by Peter Gow. She said: “Our aim was to get an early goal and we relaxed after that and played our shinty. All our hard work has paid off today.”

McFarlane misses out

His performances were recognised when he was named in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Scotland under 21 squads. But if 1979 brought the disappointment of relegation it also brought the triumph of a cup victory. After 29 years the Sutherland Cup was again destined for Skye. In a performance “marked more by character and determination than by smooth-flowing shinty” they beat Kyles Athletic 3-2 in Fort William on 12 May. James Pringle and Jordan Murchison gave Skye an early 2-0 lead, which Ruaraidh MacLeod extended to 3-0 at half-time.
