Drivers must manually enter their details onto an analogue tachograph. They do this by writing their work mode onto a sheet of wax paper. This must then be physically put into the device at the start of their shift. Continuous Driving: There are limits on the number of hours a driver can continuously drive without taking a break. This helps prevent exhaustion on long-haul routes. Indeed, even newly qualifieddrivers are not, in our experience,being trained in respect of thesenew obligations – which is hardlysurprising given there has been noDVSA or DfT publicity at all.

The inner part of the chart is used by the driver to write their name, the location of the start and end of the journey, the date and odometer readings. An analogue tachograph system comprises of a sender unit, tachograph head and a recording medium. In the case of an analogue tachograph, the recording medium is a wax coated paper disc, which is pre-printed with a 24 hour scale. Company cards are issued by DVLA in the company name. Company cards do not primarily hold data but act as an electronic key to protect and access data from the VU. A company can hold up to 2,232 cards, which will have identical card numbers but different issue numbers at the end of the card number that enable operators to tell them apart.

Businesses utilising vehicles requiring tachographs will hold an Operator’s Licence issued by the Traffic Commissioner. They are obliged to have an effective system in place to analyse compliance with drivers’ hours rules, which includes having tachographs used properly and the records kept as required.
