Even taking this into consideration, however, I'm not sure how much more I would have enjoyed it, if at all, if I had read the hard copy. I'm finding that the right narrator can make all the difference when it comes to listening to any audiobook and I think the narrator for "The Couple Next Door" was great. Here we have two distraught parents, whose baby is missing; they are wondering if she has been kidnapped, and this is what Marco tells his wife:

Anne and husband Marco Contis are asked to their next door neighbors, Cynthia and husband Graham Stillwell for a dinner party, to celebrate Graham’s birthday. No” babies” allowed, so Anne hires a babysitter, who cancels at the last moment. Now what? How could she possibly go? Finishing this book last night, I was left musing about how I felt about the book. It was definitely addictive reading and kept me hooked. The parts which left me wondering, were, I felt, a little too far-fetched. Goodness me, this book was so full of twists and turns, I don't know whether I'm on my head or my heels right now! So to start with, I listened to the audio version of the book. The narrator Shakira Shute did a good job in my opinion. Nice distinct voices and I felt she really added the emotion that was appropriate to the scenes at the time. Tony Parsons is a bestselling novelist and an award-winning journalist. His books have been published in over forty languages and his multi-million selling novel Man and Boy won The Book of The Year prize in 2000. Most recently, he created the Max Wolfe crime series. Tony lives in London with his family.

I did see all the twists coming though. It wasn't that I wasn't surprised by them, I literally had them figured out almost from the first quarter of the book. I really thought the author wanted us to think it was what I guessed and then I'd be hit with a big plot twist. But nope, totally predictable.

Dense particles of deception are scattered in every nook and cranny. What you think that you see with your own eyes is not necessarily what you see. You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there. It all started with a “what were you thinking?” moment! Then rapidly morphs into a parent’s worst nightmare.

the mother who has been suffering postpartum depression? Maybe she killed her? Or maybe the father arranged the Kidnapping for ransom since his business was in serious trouble? Or maybe the babysitter who cancelled at last minute was guilty? Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) in The Couple Next Door. Soon Lana discovers the truth behind what happened in their dream home and it is increasingly making her uneasy. She can't settle, especially when she discovers strangers trespassing on her property stealing a photo of her house or two. When she discovers that Roman knew about the house's history she is furious. How could he even think she would want to live here with that hanging over them? And then a chance encounter with the internet sleuths who she caught on her property has her digging for answers about what really happened behind these closed doors. But the more Lana digs, the more uneasy she feels.

The writing in this story is truly atmospheric and I felt like I was experiencing it at the same time as Ellie. Although there were elements of the plot that I predicted, there were still plenty of engrossing, toe-curling surprises. Whilst I don’t think this is as dark as perhaps some of Beevis’s other novels, there were some scenes that were pretty horrific. I think this added to the intensity of the story, making it perfect for these dark, winter nights. While Ash is away on a work trip, he finds he can’t get a hold of Ellie and starts to worry. He comes home and can’t find her or their dog, Poppy. Little does he know that there is more to their house than he knows and definitely more to his neighbors than he could ever imagine. Their new home is their dream. Their new neighbours are welcoming. The Gardens feels like the perfect place for the Wades – Lana and Roman, a photographer and a doctor – to begin again. Detective Rasbach is the investigating officer, and it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems, and that everyone involved is a suspect in some way, with secrets and lies aplenty. Potentially offensive content includes language and violence. I thought the foul language was excessive and really took away from the story. It didn't fit the characters at all. While I would love to gorge myself on PT, they tend to work better for me if I space them out of bit. Thankfully, I passed on this one when it was first released, taking a slight break from the genre, so I didn’t burn myself out on it. As you can tell from my attitude concerning the first chapter, I definitely needed that space. The first 75% of the book was terrific--lots of twists and turns, well-paced, interesting character development and relationships, I was eager to return to my audiobook every time I was away from it. I also loved that contrary to most thrillers that save the big reveal for the end, in this book, you find out who kidnapped the baby halfway through the book--so you get to watch everyone scramble and unravel from there on out. I liked it so much that I was mentally composing my 4-star review while I listened.
