The book is celebrated annually on 16 June, a date now known as ‘Bloomsday’, named after the main protagonist from the novel, Leopold Bloom. It also happens to be the date that Joyce went on his first date with his future wife, Nora Barnacle. Joycean enthusiasts mark the day by wearing Victorian attire and visiting venues across Dublin that feature in the book. While we have divested from our own distillery, it is a significant milestone in our whiskey journey. Bernard sources whiskeys made to his exacting specifications. He then augments the spirits through blending and finishing, honouring old styles and creating new ones in the process.

The novel is celebrated on the same historic date every year. The day is known as ‘Bloomsday’, after the main character Leopold Bloom, and Joycean enthusiasts dress in Victorian attire and visit venues that feature in the novel all across Dublin. On this occasion we are majoring on a classic pot still whiskey and pairing it with American Bourbon barrels, Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks from Spain, and Florio Marsala hogsheads from Sicily. We have cut it at a juicy 46% ABV,” says Bernard. They chose to remain close to their agricultural upbringings while pursuing their shared quest to produce the perfect drop, or taoscán (dram), of Irish whiskey.

Rich and heavy it has layers of sweeter fruity flavors and darker malty and candy flavors and aromas that balance each other out quite well. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. In so doing, he has become a leader in the renaissance period of Irish whiskey’s second coming, which began in the early 2000s. Bernard’s resurrection of old recipes saw the rediscovery of the ‘Champagne blend’ of Irish whiskey – a marriage of single pot still and single malt whiskeys popular in the 19 th century. Malt, caramel, toffee, orchard fruit, vanilla, dynamic dark sweets, creamy vanilla and some copper with a bit of lemon and hazelnuts. I’m a bit surprised by the richness. Disaronno International EVP/General Manager, Ray Stoughton, said: “We are excited and proud to be expanding Writers’ Tears presence and availability in the United States. Writers’ Tears is a world-class whiskey that has achieved a dedicated following that will only continue to gain momentum as we expand into new markets in the US. Irish whiskey will continue to be one of the hottest categories in all spirits in 2018. Writers’ Tears positioning in the super-premium segment of the category will continue to push the Irish whiskey category to even greater heights.”

Our Portfolio

Bernard and Rosemary Walsh plan to extend their super-premium Irish whiskey offering, thus increasing the supply of exceptional bottlings available to their growing number of loyal patrons. The distillery at Royal Oak produces all three forms of Irish whiskey – pot still, malt and grain – from its two production lines, featuring pot stills and column stills, in one still house. The manually operated distillery has the capacity to produce 650,000 cases (two and a half million litres of pure alcohol (LPA’s) or 8 million bottles) of whiskey annually. The one significant missing link in Walsh Whiskey’s rich portfolio has been a pure single pot still expression, but that is all set to change. The journey to a pure single pot still whiskey
