Interestingly, Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera with dual touchscreens, which means you can access settings from any angle while keeping the camera in perfect position. The other place the Osmo Action 3 impresses is battery life. DJI claims 160 minutes at 1080p. I only managed 140 (with the rear screen off, the front screen used about half that time), which is slightly more than I managed with the GoPro Hero11 (which claims 137 minutes, I got 124 minutes). Moving to 4K at 30fps, the Osmo Action pulled off 75 minutes to the GoPro Hero11’s 70 minutes. Also impressive is the recharge time—I was able to get the batteries fully recharged in 52 minutes.

Tested in a 25° C (77° F) laboratory environment while recording 1080p/30fps video with EIS disabled and both screens off, and should be used for reference only. Where the DJI Action 2 dropped the ball was heat management. Its small body and exposed metal design resulted in uncomfortably hot temperatures after even short bouts of recording high-resolution content. This time, though, DJI has improved things significantly. At the base of the Action 3 is a magnetic mounting connector for landscape mounting, and in the box, you also get a Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame, which wraps around the camera to enable tall, TikTok-ready mounting in portrait orientation.

The above video hasn't been edited in the DJI Mimo app, but you can edit footage there if you wish. I found the app's editing suite adequate; it does the basics well, but I wouldn't mind some more editing options. There is an AI editor that, in theory, could help you create social media-worthy clips of multiple videos, but in my experience, it struggles a bit to make sense of what's happening in the footage. We found the sharp 326ppi screens to be a pleasure to use, as smooth as butter and very bright. The rear screen is 2.25-inch and 360x640 pixels, in keeping with the 16:9 ratio of video. The 320x320 front screen by necessity offers a cropped view that is nevertheless enormously helpful in framing up a to-camera piece for vlogging. In addition to 4K120 with sound, the Osmo Action 3 has a dedicated slow-motion mode that records silently and slows down footage in camera, with a 4x slow-mo effect available at 4K and 2.7K, and either 4x or 8x at 1080p. And the Osmo Action 3 supports time lapses, both from a fixed camera position or with motion. Both are available at 4K.

Dual Handrim – Suitable for individuals for who predominantly have use of one side of their upper body. * The DJI also falls behind when it comes to stills photography – it’s restricted to 12MP where the GoPro goes all the way up to 27MP – and these aren’t the only limitations. The suitability to each model above is a very brief guide to give an understanding of how diverse the Action 3NG can be and not limited to the information provided. Your Retailer or Service Provider can offer more information on suitability according to individual needs.I recommend turning off push notifications, however, as DJI has unfortunately opted to use Mimo as a delivery system for product announcement and sale notifications. I hate seeing ads on my phone's screen, and camera apps shouldn't add to the noise. Voice Control recognizes voice commands with a high recognition rate to control the camera when hands are busy.

The customizability options extend to the product’s design, which features a modern and expanded colour range in addition to an iincreased positioning offer. The dual screens offer the same options presented to suit the display size. (Image credit: Adam Juniper / Digital Camera World)

A Good Alternative to GoPro

The DJI Osmo Action 3 has a few things going for it that competing GoPro Hero cameras don't match, including the front touch LCD, a 52-foot waterproof rating, and easy-on-easy-off mounting system. Battery life is another strong point, with good runtimes, a resistance to overheating, and a sensible charging case accessory as marks in its favor.

And, yes, it is also significantly cheaper than its main rival. The big question is can it compete where it matters: image quality? While the front touch display is cramped at 1.4 inches, the main screen is much more spacious, measuring 2.25 inches. With both screens sporting a pixel density of 326PPI, they're plenty sharp, and they also get nice and bright for easy outdoor viewing. Compact – Suitable for smaller individuals who may require lower seat to ground heights, shorter legrests etc.* US customers may have extra concern about transmitting data to DJI, as the company is on the Treasury Department's Entity List due to allegations of the company's involvement in digital surveillance of the Uyghur ethnic minority.
