About this deal

Belgaum was founded in late 12th century AD by the Ratta dynasty, who shifted from nearby Saundatti. A Ratta official named Bichiraja built Kamal Basadi, a Jain temple, dedicated to Neminatha in 1204, which came to be called Kamalabasti. Pillars found inside Belgaum fort have Kannada inscriptions in Nagari scripts, one from 1199 by Ratta King Kartaveerya IV. The city original name was Venugram, a Sanskrit word which means "village of bamboo". Alternatively, it is referred to as Venugram in early Indian texts, which means "city of bamboo". The most remarkable of ʿAbd-al-Jalīl’s verse compositions was a dictionary in verse drawing upon Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Hindi sources. Jawāher al-kalām ( Cat. Bankipore VIII, p. 143) is a unique testimony to ʿAbd-al-Jalīl’s mastery of all four of the languages in which he composed poetry. His interest in Hindi poetry is especially notable: It culminates a tradition among Indo-Muslim litterateurs which began with Amīr Ḵosrow and reached its high point during the reign of Akbar in the Padmāvat of Malek Moḥammad Jāʾesī and the Hindi dīvān of ʿAbd-al-Raḥīm Ḵān(-e) Ḵānān. The Bilgrami Sayyids benefitted from the patronage of the Grand Vizier Munim Khan II, who was known for his support of Indian Sayyids and Shaikhzadas. When Ruh-ul-Amin Khan of Bilgram reportedly entered state service with only 60 horsemen and foot soldiers, the Munim Khan II created him a mansab of 6000 and made him his close associate. [14] The Bilgrami Sayyids were later firm supporters of the Barah Sayyids, with whom they shared ancestry, when the latter had risen as de-facto rulers of the Mughal empire after the death of Aurangzeb. [4] He conquered the place from the Thatheras, named it "Srinagar" after himself, and built the fort, temple, and the Sagar tank. [4] The Raikwars then ruled the area until the Muslim conquest, but when or how that happened is unclear. [4]
