About this deal

Similar to the no-poo method, the Curly Girl Method is all about keeping it as natural as possible. The philosophy is simple, albeit somewhat overwhelming, especially for those who have been relaxing, straightening and treating their hair with chemical products for years and years.

I apply gel when dripping wet and then I use an old t-shirt to get rid of excess water. I then apply gel again and start diffusing. I unfortunately have been having to wash my hair every day as my hair doesn’t like refreshing, so maybe that is it? I normally wash my hair very infrequently so it might be due to overwashing? I’m so confused. Again, depending on your hair type, this might be a totally separate conditioner, or you might be able to use the same conditioner that you used as a cleanser)Anabel Kingsley, brand president and trichologist at Philip Kingsley, reinforces the importance of scalp health. “Hair health is intrinsically linked to scalp health. For a balanced, optimal scalp environment, it must be clean to flourish and be healthy,” she says. “If you’re using the correct shampoo for your hair texture, it shouldn’t strip your hair. If it does, then it’s too cleansing and doesn’t contain enough moisturising ingredients for your hair texture. When it comes to looking after curly hair and wavy hair, it’s important to maintain natural oils for added moisture. The curly girl method avoids heat, chemicals and damaging techniques that will otherwise result in dehydrated curls and therefore, damage.

Microfibre towels: use a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel to dry your hair or wrap it up for plopping. There are some non-drying alcohols such as aminomethyl propanol, Cetearyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol which are safe to use. While the hair is still wet, apply your curl enhancing product, Williams says. ”Manipulate the products through your hair from root to ends.” Massey’s product of choice is a curly hair gel and you want to apply more than you think. This will not only help with definition, but it will keep your curls frizz-free, too. It creates a gel cast that may seem hard and stiff at first, but will be "broken" later, so don’t fret. Rake the product through and scrunch the ends of your hair up towards the roots. This movement will become your new norm for applying styling products. It really gets the curl definition to a new level. 5. Dry To be truly Curly Girl compliant, you need to avoid specific ingredients that merely sit on your strands and don’t penetrate the hair, which can cause the hair to look heavy or lank and unable to hold a bouncy curl. Ingredients and practices to avoid are: Don’t worry if you have frizzy curls to begin with. It takes a long time to get those big juicy clumps of curls in the shower if you’re just starting out.Don’t towel-dry your hair – no, not even gently. It creates frizz and roughens up the hair cuticles.

To follow the curly girl method you’ll need to understand the rules. Lorraine’s handbook contains a set of do’s and don’ts that are designed to help curly hair and wavy hair thrive. The idea is that you avoid chemical-based products and any harmful styling techniques. I, personally, learned everything I currently know about CGM from both Naturally Curly and Reddit’s r/CurlyHair community, and I highly recommend reading their ultimate curly hair guide (though warning: It’s a bit overwhelming). Curlsbot.com also has a phenomenal quiz on your hair porosity (very, VERY important to your overall curly hair journey) with product recommendations, too. This answer is going to differ wildly depending on who you ask (and how strict they are). Technically, the Curly Girl Method doesn't allow for traditional brushing, because it disturbs your curl pattern. The common advice you'll see is to only brush your hair in the shower with a wide-tooth comb when it's saturated with conditioner. The only catch? This method doesn't work for everyone. Even though it takes SO much effort and takes SO long, really try and master ONE good wash+dry. If you get it right, you’ll know that you actually CAN do it and that your hair responds well to the products you used. I find that I have a bad hair day when I didn’t really give it my all.The CURLSMITH Curl Quenching Conditioning Wash is a vegan co-wash for wavy, curly, and coily hair and definitely lives up to the hype. It really can be a minefield but if you experiment and keep at it, you should definitely see results! 🙂 Omg, so glad to hear your completely unbiased, totally real response. Glad to be of service, and please DM me your magical hair results in three months (or, realistically, your frantic questions in approximately 24 hours). I shall be waiting.
