About this deal

At the core, the DMX512 uses RS485, but adds software layers and features. The video uses the OSI model to show how the system works.

DMX problems can manifest themselves in a few ways. It may be that your lights aren’t working at all, or perhaps they’re not doing the correct thing! Stage lights have changed significantly since the 20th century. When DMX-512 was designed, most fixtures were incandescent fixtures, typically high-wattage sources, 750 watts or more. Each fixture generally only had one channel of lighting control. If you wanted to color the light, you put a color filter in front of the light. If you wanted to move the light, you positioned a technician with a communications headset next to the light. It was highly unusual to have more than 512 lights in a single light plot; typical stage shows might have between 12 and 300. All the DMX control lines could go to one central place, where the dimmers were, and power to the fixtures was broken out from the dimmers.

The default idle state of the bus is at logic 1 (a high voltage on the line A, and a low voltage on line B), and logic high (such as 5V or 3.3V) at the microcontroller side of the RS-485 transceiver).

A DMX512 controller is connected to fixtures or devices in a multi-drop bus topology commonly called a “ Daisy Chain”. Each device has a 'DMX512 in' and generally a 'DMX512 out' connector - sometimes marked as 'DMX512 thru'. The 'DMX512 out' on the controller is linked via a DMX512 cable to the 'DMX512 in' on the first fixture. A second cable then links the 'DMX512 out' on the first fixture to the next device, and so on. In general, the final, empty, 'DMX512 out' connector should have a DMX512 terminating plug attached into it, which is simply a resistor that matches the impedance of the cabling used (usually 120 ohms) joining pins 2 and 3 of the connector. Many modern devices negate this requirement as they are capable of auto-terminating the link. A picture says a thousand words. The oscilloscope trace below shows in yellow the logic level signals corresponding to the data stream of values (in hexadecimal) 0x00, 0x0A, 0x0A, 0x0A. The bits/bytes will be examined later but for now we can examine the voltage levels. The yellow trace is a 5V logic level signal suitable for 5V microcontrollers. Output from the touch controller will be wired in daisy chain in case of using more than one DMX decoders.

There are many other kinds of DMX fixtures. It’s also become popular to control LED strips and programmable LEDs with DMX, and for that purpose, there are a range of controllers you can buy. What Do I Need If I want to Control DMX From My Computer? This blog post doesn’t cover the design of a controller, but is intended to document the DMX protocol with real-world traces, to complement the work Dave did. Together there are now two practical examples of DMX implementations, so that it is possible to build solutions with high levels of interoperability.
