About this deal

Farmers in California grow an array of what Joseph calls “ specialty crops”. California farms produce more of these crops – such as almonds, artichokes and broccoli – than any other state in the country. More than a quarter of the food produced in the US, including most of the country’s fruits and vegetables, comes from California, according to the Food & Environment Reporting Network, which credits the state’s long hot summers and mild winters for its ability to produce so much. Unequal distribution of unpaid care work, agricultural labour and domestic chores exacerbated, e.g. more time spent collecting depleted supplies of water and wood

Louisa Cox, Director of Impact at the Fairtrade Foundation said: “It takes two to grow cocoa, it’s a partnership crop that needs both the man and the woman to successfully see it through to harvest. Yet often the woman does two thirds of the work for less than a third of the income, meaning a bitter taste to the sweet treat. Gender norms determine that men are often responsible for tasks with greater physical demands and/or in technical roles, whilst women are over-represented in lower paid jobs e.g. sorting departments, due to their perceived efficiency. New roles and green jobs e.g. fixing solar panels or irrigation systems, or transporting goods in electric vehicles, offer opportunities for career advancement for women farmer or changes to the gender division of roles or changes to the gender division of roles. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the hundreds of women smallholders and workers who participated in the research. Their voices are central to the findings in this consolidated report. Women are disproportionately negatively affected by climate change due to intersections between gender, power dynamics, socio-economic structures, and societal norms and expectations. [footnote 5] [footnote 6] As the research in this report shows, women in agricultural supply chains face a number of challenges including a gender gap in access to and control of economic assets including land, tools, credit, and digital technologies. [footnote 7] [footnote 8] These gaps exist in large part due to prevailing social norms that determine women’s role in society. This is not always the case – for instance, certain regions in Malawi are matrilineal, meaning women inherit and own land (Malawi ETP) ↩

There’s so much of it,’” Glencross says. “And John goes: ‘Oh probably for animal feed. It’s a consistent market, they’ll take it, it’s easy, even if we don’t earn that much money from it.’ And I was like: ‘This is crazy.’ And that was the beginning of me getting on this grain bender because I was like: ‘Why can’t we grow these grains organically and not feed them to animals?’ So I realised I’d have to start a business, because there were not very many people doing that.”

Learning to farm from scratch has not been straightforward, but you sense that’s a big part of the appeal for Glencross. “There’s all these decisions the farmer makes throughout the year and why he sprays and why he doesn’t,” she says. “You realise that most people get up, sit at a computer all day and if they press the wrong button, they just delete it. When you’re a farmer, you plant at the wrong time of year and tomorrow it washes away your whole crop.”SACCOs are formal Savings and Credit Co-Operative Society that are member-based financial institutions ↩ We offer a variety of skirts and dresses, including midi dresses, pencil skirts, and elegant long dresses that are perfect for brunch with friends or impressing colleagues at the office.
