About this deal

Making felt birds has been on my crafting to do list for quite some time. So earlier this year, I made it a priority to design and make a set of printable felt bird patterns for our Etsy shop. I just love how these little birds turned out! Making Felt Birds with Printabe Patterns Start to fill up the design gradually with your chosen stuffing. With this design, I like to start with the tail area and push a small amount of fiber fill in this area.

This book is a delight from cover to cover. It starts by explaining what items are needed to complete the projects and then goes on, in simple terms, to talk about techniques from drawing templates to cutting out the felt, to embellishing with hand sewn embroidery. These stitches are clearly explained at the beginning of the book in easy to follow instructions and photos. There are even simple instructions for making birds feet. And of course, theres a selection of embroidery stitch instructions with step-by-step photos as well. There are twenty very attractive birds to make. Each of them a pleasing mix of well chosen felt colours and embroidery stitches. We’ll send the template straight to your inbox, and let you know when we come out with more free printable patterns! Finally, to make the tail, simply roll some wool on the needle (the part that has barbs). Slide the needle up and down to tangle the wool and bind them together. Be careful when you do this and don’t get your finger into the needle.

Cut the pink felt into half. Fold 1 piece into half and cut out a heart shape. Repeat the same to cut out another heart. Place the decorated bird base pattern piece onto of the plain bird base and stitch along the sides. This is a book to make you smile. A clever use of simple embroidery stitches such as fly, seed, chain and French knots are used effectively to give each of the birds their individual characters. From materials and tools, we move into techniques: transferring the template designs to felt, to sewing, filling, stuffing, making legs and feet, appliqué, and all the techniques necessary for creating a three dimensional bird.

To make these needle felted birds you will need:

Alternatively, turn it into a brooch pin, bag clip, keychain or just a freestanding plush. Find the free pattern template at the end of this craft tutorial. Choose one piece of felt for the front of your bird. Sew the wing into place as shown in the photo above. The main beginner issue is not adding in enough stuffing. You nearly always need more than you think. Just add in small sections at a time. Don't get impatient and try to stuff in a huge amount in one go because it won't look good. The square format of this beautiful book makes it feel different and inside it is filled with the enthusiasm of the author for her felt birds. Enjoy this beginner sewing project which makes up a small and simple bird design. I've turned this into an ornament which can be hung on a tree, a display stand or on the wall.
