About this deal

A second coat of your whitewash paint is not always necessary, but if you feel the first coat was a little thin, you can give the plywood a second coat to improve the whitewash effect. To remedy the defect, it is necessary to apply further coats, avoiding any earlier faults in thinning, stirring or application.

Satin finishes are also excellent for hiding imperfections in the material that’s being painted, and a lot more flexible on the material that you can apply them to. Either way, you still end up with a good finish. Semi-gloss finishes can look exceptional when done properly. A high shine gloss is hard wearing, looks really professional, and can actually be easier to clean than a lot of other styles of paint. Apply the paint to the plywood with a brush. Apply an even coat of whitewash mix paint on the plywood. The failure of a paint system to hide or obliterate the colour of the original surface or the previous paint.

An alternative to a plain color finish can be painting on the guitar, gluing a printed image, cloth cover, and more. There are also many versatile sprays with glitter, metallic finish, and textures. The possibilities are endless. Applying Color to your guitar Using a Spray can Types of oils for your guitar finish include a wide range, which all have their strengths and characteristics. It also depends on the make. Some luthiers will swear by one type. The most common ones are: Tang oil, True oil, Teak oil and Danish oil. Applying a Solid Opaque Color The gloss guitars are convenient to clean as you can use the soft cloth and cleaning wax – it helps clear the stains and maintain the gloss/shine of the finishing. If you did sand up to a very smooth surface with say, 5000grit, you may be able to skip the more aggressive compound and just do a couple of passes with the finer one. You can use softer pads or cloth for the last one or two passes. Polishing Tips

Offering an elegant and durable finish, high gloss sits on the top of the sheen chart,’ says Helen Shaw, UK director of Benjamin Moore. ‘It is easy to clean, stain-resistant and is often used on trims and doors due to its hard-wearing properties. Many interior designers and adventurous homeowners like to experiment with high gloss in unexpected areas, such as using it as a paint finish for a ceiling or an accent wall. Keep in mind however, that high gloss paints require careful application and preparation. It’s important to prime surfaces to ensure they are even and clean prior to paint application. Since a gloss finish reflects light and can accentuate blemishes, avoid using it on areas that are not completely smooth.’ What is the best way to apply gloss paint? Apply the first layer using a 1200-1500grit paper (I like the sponge) to create a sort of slurry of oil and fine dust. This will help fill and seal the pores a bit better. Do wipe off the residue, you do not want it to dry on top. Next time you build a project using plywood, experiment a little with the finishes. You will be pleasantly surprised how you can improve the final look of your project with this cheap material!

What Is a Satin Finish?

However, if the gloss paint you want to paint over is in very good condition and only recently painted, i.e. a few weeks/months ago, it should be OK. Gloss varnishes require a lot more preparation and work before application, but can look amazing when done correctly. Gloss varnishes are incredibly reflective, almost like mirrors, but require a perfectly level and stable surface before they’re applied, otherwise, every single imperfection will be obvious to even untrained eyes. As far as cleaning is concerned, you can use the microfiber cloth for cleaning the guitar as well as the fretboard. Keep in mind that you should use polish on the satin guitars because it damages the guitars. Allow the primer to dry. The primer should be given sufficient time to dry completely, usually 24-hours, before applying the paint.

What Is a Gloss Finish?

Lay new plastic disposable dust sheets in the area you plan to work in. If you use material dust sheets make sure they are completely dust free. Stir the gloss paint. Load the brush with gloss as shown in the picture and start painting in the middle and work outwards (as in step 8). Allow the gloss to flow out over the surface as you paint – don’t be tempted to over brush the paint or you’ll leave marks. Keep an eye out for runs in the paint (corners are particularly prone to them) and brush them out immediately. Prepare your surface using sandpaper to make sure it is smooth; make sure you clean all of the dust before applying a primer coat. Both satin and gloss finishes are popular, and each is best in certain situations. You’ll also likely discover additional options, including the in-between semi-gloss finish. That may only make choosing that much more challenging. Apply the wipe-on poly with a cloth as directed. Give the first coat time to dry completely, then lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper. Clean off the plywood sanding dust with a damp cloth and apply a second coat of the wipe-on poly.

Apply the wood stain. Use a paintbrush to apply the stain, and wipe off excess stain with a lint-free cloth. This technique will age your plywood to give it the look of an old weathered barn door, or the look of a piece of driftwood washed up on the beach. You will need a whitewash mix as we used previously, but white acrylic paint is better for this process, diluted 1:1 with water. You will need the list of supplies below for this finish. Within each type, there are also different plywood grades, usually grades A through D, with grade D being the lowest grade and grade A being the top grade. When surface contamination is responsible, it will usually be necessary to remove the affected material, clean the surface thoroughly and repaint.Apply the polyurethane. Use a paintbrush and apply the matte finish polyurethane according to the product instructions. This will seal the wood and protect the finish. Put your can in hot water for a few minutes. The warm paint will flow more evenly and give smaller drops. If you have problems with the staining process, you should read our article on “How To Fix A Bad Wood Stain Job” for some tips and ideas. Once you have prepared your surface so that it is ready to paint, you can apply gloss paint with a suitable mini roller or small brush, depending on the size of the area.
