About this deal

The Netflix show is based on a series of graphic novels by Luke Pearson, which are freely adapted for television. The showrunner is Stephanie Simpson, who has found a smart way to incorporate the graphic novels’ cast of characters (which builds slowly across the series) into much of season one of the show, while also finding magic in the mundane. And the lead performance is courtesy of Bella Ramsey ( Game of Thrones’ Lyanna Mormont herself!), who gives Hilda a stubborn quality that is in turns endearing and sweetly cringe-inducing. Each episode imparts a solid lesson in taking consequences for your actions. It’s an excellent antidote to more standard children’s television that falls into a kind of “chosen one syndrome.” So much of children’s media perpetuates this idea that, if motivated by the right set of morals, everything will be okay as a result of purely good intentions. In Hilda, things don’t always work out. Frida disappears from the Sparrow Scouts because failing to clean her room sends her into a spiral. At times, the two friends can barely tolerate each other.

Shared with Clint Eland, Kurt Mueller, Stephanie Simpson, Adam Idelson, Chantal Ling, Rachel Simon and Andrew Hymas I did not see any storyboards, but occasionally asked to see images of particular characters or settings, such as the Trolberg librarian, the school principal or the Lindworm’s lair. How would you describe the character of Hilda to someone who has never met her? While on an expedition to seek out the magical creatures of the mountains around her home, Hilda spots a mountain troll. Whimsy doesn't come off so well in the critical eye when compared to the towering works of the literary canon. As wonderful as some of us know The House on Pooh Corner to be, it's hard to compare Milne with the likes of Kafka, Proust, Hemmingway, Joyce, and Conrad. Serious works just feel more literary, more artistically viable. Whimsy too is often mistaken for escapism and escapism (justly or not) has been targeted as the opponent of worthwhile artistic achievement. And if escapist narrative, by its nature, ignores with braggadocio the primary concerns of the Great Writers, then certainly books suffused with the whimsical must also be suspect.

SA: We have just released Hilda’s Book of Beasts, which is a gift book TV tie-in—a compendium of the creatures that appear in the TV show. I’m interested to see how that title does in the trade. So far, it’s doing great. All the titles sell well for us, and the tie-in titles allow us to reach a new audience. Given recent unpredictability in trade sales due to the pandemic, it’s still quite difficult to draw any direct comparisons between the two types of publishing. How was the experience of working on Hilda , which you developed from your own comics and executive produced, different from the work you did storyboarding for two seasons of Adventure Time? Did you have control over new storylines, for instance? The thing that got me, is the idea of these mysterious, folkloric creatures living side by side with present day humans, and the idea of that being a pretty normal thing and not all that fantastical. Elves, trolls, giants etc. are usually depicted in an ancient, forgotten past. And if they show up in the modern world, it's likely to be a big deal – creatures that are discovered or unleashed and don't fit in. But then in Iceland, there are these stories of roads being diverted to avoid elf settlements in the present day. I remember being in Norway and seeing a boulder and feeling like, "yeah, I can believe that's a troll." So that's the sort of thing I wanted to tap into with Hilda. Hilda and the Troll was originally published by No Brow as Hildafolk. Flying Eye Books renamed it to Hilda and the Troll with subsequent printings. It was adapted into episode one of the animated Netflix series. Hilda and the Midnight Giant cover by Luke Pearson. Hilda and the Midnight Giant Johanna – Hilda's mother is caring and supportive, but often worries for her daughter. In her youth she was a Sparrow Scout, a fictional Trolberg equivalent to scouting groups.Lempeän ja sopivasti jännittävän seikkailun yhtenä opetuksena voisi pitä metsäläisen lausumaa "Kirjat kannattaisi lukea kokonaan, ei niitä ole tehty kirjahyllyn koristeiksi." LP: It was a different role and process entirely. Even just from the point of view of being a writer for both, on Adventure Time, I was working from a rough story outline and “writing” the episode via drawing the storyboards themselves, because it was a board-driven show. There wasn't a script. Hilda is script-driven, so you're writing an actual screenplay, which is then recorded with the voice actors, and the storyboard artists work from that. And with Hilda, I'm also working on the entire project at the same time, and I'm obviously much more invested in it as a whole.
