Connecting the ESXi hosts to the iSCSI targets and the NFS exports is done in the exact same way that you would with any other storage system, so I won’t be including details on that in this post. On my physical desktop rig, even with two GPUs it struggles to allow me to preview in realtime the edits I’ve done on a project. The preview window is jolty with loss frames, and it’s hard to know what you’re doing. Also, when producing and encoding a finalized video project, it would take forever to complete even a small 5 minute video at 1080p. If you’re familiar with NVMe pricing, you’ll notice that this pricing is extremely attractive when comparing to other high performance NVMe SSDs. Unboxing By utilizing a SLOG for ZIL, you can have dedicated SSDs which will act as your intent log for writes to the zpool. On writes that request a synchronous write, they will be marked as completed when sent to the ZIL and written to the SLOG device. I also went with an mATX board since I already have a case that only supports mATX or smaller, and I only needed the top PCIe slot to work in x16 (x4x4x4x4) and a second PCIe slot to work in x4 mode. Take note of the mount point and/or NFS export path, as this is the directory your Raspberry Pi will need to mount to access it’s NFS root. This is also the directory you will be copying your SD Card Linux install root FS to. Copy the Linux install to the NFS Export After spending forever trying to tweak and optimize, I found that NFS was best for the Synology NAS unit of mine. What’s this new NFS v4.1 thing? For iSCSI, you need to create a zVol and then configure the iSCSI Target settings and make it available.
