About this deal

Unfortunately by this stage it is often too late to save the plant, but if caught earlier before the roots decompose then action can be taken to rectify the situation. Pot grown Acers are particularly vulnerable to winter frosts. Wrap your containers with fleece or bubble wrap. Culturally, the maple leaf has been a common symbol for strength and endurance. It is featured on both the Canadian flag and the Canadian coat of arms and is also their national tree. Affected plants start to wilt, sometimes just one section, with lower leaves becoming discoloured to yellow and brown. Acer Prinz Handjery maple trees are perfect for patios. In the spring, bright pink leaves make a cheerful splash of colour that will keep you looking forward to the coming of summer. During the changing seasons, watch your Acer Prinz Handjery turn its leaves into different shades of brilliant red and orange in autumn before settling into winter.

Signs of this can be the plant looking too large for the container as well as devitalised and straggly. Use a container no more than double the size of the pot your tree is growing in. Any type of container is fine but it's essential it has good drainage. If necessary, drill a number of holes in the centre of the base. Holes can be drilled in most containers – for ceramic ones use a slow-speed drill and a masonry bit, making a small hole first and then enlarging it with larger bits. Acer x conspicuum ‘Phoenix’ has bright pink stems while Acer palmatum ‘Winter Flame’ has red or coral coloured branches. Containerised trees can be planted at any time of year providing your ground is not icy, snow-covered or water-logged. It's also best to avoid excessively windy days to avoid the risk of your plant being damaged if it accidentally topples over. If you have the choice, plant in the autumn at least one month before the first frost. They will grow in most soils except very dry, waterlogged or alkaline conditions. A moist yet well-drained, slightly acidic loam rich in organic matter is ideal. Other soils can be enriched with ericaceous compost when planting. Remove the pot and place the root mass in the planting hole so that the surface is flush with the surrounding ground. Using 50% of the original soil and 50% compost, fill in the hole and firm around gently. Use ericaceous compost when possible as this encourages vibrant foliage colour in Japanese Maples. Japanese maples that have been planted out into the garden don't require heavy fertilisation so feed sparingly ideally using a fertiliser with a 3:1 ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus in spring. Avoid using nitrogen lawn feed in the immediate vicinity as excessive nitrogen can cause overly vigorous growth that's more vulnerable to disease.

This fungus also travels through the soil and can affect numerous different plants, including fruit and vegetables. The plant we send you will already be around two feet tall and very bushy. It will be supplied in a 5-litre pot. This is nothing to worry about, and there should be an even more colourful display through autumn before the leaves do fall. It’s fair to say that even the most novice gardeners should be able to achieve great success with acer trees. Even with a very small space most gardeners will be able to find room for at least one if not more acers. Apart from being slow growing and long lived small acers have even more going for them. They are of course outstandingly attractive trees. The rich colours and forms of their foliage gives a boost to any planting scheme. We have one of the widest range of trees in the UK, and for those plants which we cannot despatch next day we will normally despatch within 4 weeks. The despatch time for different products will be confirmed when products are added to your shopping basket Low maintenance, this plant needs little pruning. If pruning is necessary, prune during the dormant season and avoid pruning in spring when the sap is running. Fertilize in spring before the leaves emerge.
