About this deal

Like taking a foreign-language class for a language in which you are already fluent, this lens gets an easy A+ for anyone shooting with the Sony system. The number of 35mm prime lenses currently available in the marketplace reflects the popularity of this focal length.

The Zeiss 2.8/35′ lens hood has a very unusual design. It is only about 5mm deep and it isn’t open like conventional hoods. An extremely low lens element count (7 elements in 5 groups) along with Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings helps control flare and our standard flare testing that uses the sun in the corner of the frame produces almost no flare effects from this lens, even at f/16. If you’re unsure of how big the differences between 35mm, 40mm focal length are, here is the angle of view that the Sony FE 35mm f2.8 ZA covers on a full-frame body compared to the Zeiss Batis 40mm f2.0 CF:

This Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 is a compact and ultrasharp wide lens for Sony's NEX and A7 series of cameras. On my a7 I see minor color shift, I guess on the more problematic a7r it could sometimes be a problem. The a7s and a7rii will most likely show even less color shift than the a7. Despite the diminutive size and ultra-light weight, this lens has a good quality feel and the performance is quite good. The FE 2.8/35 performs well here. Brighter stars have a small comet’s tail but compared to other lenses it is very small. The only real issue I see is the very significant vignetting. Sony a7 | Zeiss FE 2,8/35 | f/2.8 | processed heavily, vignetting corrected | full resolution

Comments

Not a strength of this lens. Sunstars are very fuzzy even at f/11. Sony a7ii | Zeiss FE 2,8/35 | f/11 Astro Use If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 6" (7.5cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 13 × 20" (33 × 50 cm). On an ASP-C/1.5x sensor format body, the 35mm focal length provides an angle of view similar to a 52.5mm lens on a full frame sensor format body. Above: Zooming-in on the middle section shows there’s no problems in terms of resolving fine detail at the maximum aperture, and no need to close it down to improve the quality here. This works on all full-frame and crop-sensor Sony E-mount cameras, which are the NEX and A7 series, among others.
