About this deal

It has no shaping so makes for an easy beginner crochet pattern and is relatively simple to adjust to fit. You can find a free 4ply / fingering weight version of the hat pattern (in the adult size) on the dora does blog. This also includes a supporting video tutorial. I know slip stitching isn’t everyone’s favourite and because of its unusual construction I created a video to demonstrate some of the less familiar techniques. Working the body into the brim, crochet in rows / rounds upwards in your stitch pattern until your body reaches a suitable height (accounting for the brim size). Although this is an Aran weight yarn, I found it to be quite a fine aran, so you may be able to meet gauge with a heavy dk or lighter worsted.

Tote Bags and Purses: Create stylish tote bags or purses with seed stitch panels for added texture and visual interest. Because of the amount of stretch in this fabric, the finished hat contains quite a lot of negative ease – that is it will be a few inches smaller than the head it is designed to fit. I had great fun designing the short row rib to make the brim look knitted and you won’t believe the amount of stretch it gives it! The slouchy hat is so comfy to wear and even though it looks quite delicate, it’s really warm too.

I love the effect from the ombre yarn in this example but think this would look awesome in a solid colour or even in a hand dyed yarn too. So I tweaked the maths and made another… and another… and eventually I got to a design I was happy with. The one you see here. This pattern is written for 1 size, however size adjustments are suggested under the heading “Size & Measurements”. In the ‘any yarn’ spirit, following my any yarn will do sweater and cardigan crochet patterns, I’ve written this ribbed crochet beanie hat pattern for multiple yarn weights too! If you increase by 3 single crochets (sc) every other round, you’re going to get something pretty pointy.

Fold the hat with the right sides together. Working from the wrong side, align the sides matching stitch to stitch from the brim up. Continue with WS facing and, referring to the joining schematic above, seam side a to a, b to b, c to c, d to d, e to e and f to f, ensuring all the points of the peak align in the centre top of the crown. The Off Piste Beanie is a top down crochet hat which uses the cozy waffle stitch to keep your nuggin’ warm whether you’re on or off the piste. The body of the hat is worked using 3.5 mm crochet hook and the ribbed brim is worked using 2.5 mm crochet hook. You can easily increase or decrease the length of the hat by increasing or decreasing the length of the starting chain (respectively). I like my slouchy hats quite long and the pattern is designed so that the brim can be turned or rolled up for a fitted look or worn as a slouchy beanie.Learn more about crochet abbreviations & find a complete list on our Crochet Abbreviations & Terms post. Stitches You Will Need In the case of a beanie hat, it’s main purpose is us usually to keep the head, and ears warm, and make you look good whilst you’re at it. On top of that, the free pattern includes step by step instructions, so if you think it looks intimidating or if you’re more of a beginner level crocheter, there are photos to guide you through.

With your rows of Jasmine Stitch done, seaming up the headband is pretty simple. Folding the headband in half end to end, ss the two corners together where you already are with your hook. Then, pull a loop out about “1 in between each join and ss at the other three puff join spaces, making sure to connect the two final corners securely. In it’s simplest form, that really is all there is to it… just insert your choice of yarn and stitch pattern. Of course there are many ways to modify this approach to achieve different shapes and styles, but the basic underlying principle remains the same. Shaping your crown Personally I found I could get a more consistent look from sewing the seams (and I am not the worlds best sewer as you will see in the video tutorial!). However, I will continue to look at ways to develop this design in this area. A close up of the crown of the double knit version of the Fisherman’s Winter Beanie Crochet Hat Pattern Skill Used How long it takes to crochet something varies depending on your skill & how fast you crochet. But that isn’t a helpful answer is it? Leaving a long tail for seaming, cut the yarn. Thread it through the 11 remaining stitches twice & gather to form the top point of the hat. With a bottom up beanie, you can start by creating the brim and working the body of the hat into it (as described in the construction section) or you can start with the body and add the brim at the end. If you’ve found this useful, don’t forget to share it with your crochet friends or on social media (every like and share helps me a lot!). Completed size: The size is for an adult small and these measure Heigh 23cm (9 inches) Circumference 45.5cm (18 inches) Approx Numbers at the end of a row / round indicate the number of stitches in that row / round and are only given at the start of a section or where there is a change I am not sure I would recommend this approach to anyone other than very confident crocheters. I found the results little inconsistent and untidy which is why I have used sewing as the main joining technique.

Crochet Technique Tutorials Learn all about crochet technique from Hannah of HanJan Crochet. There are so many ways to achieve the same result in crochet and there is no right or wrong – this is just the way I do things! As you start the hat, the stitch pattern will change each round as you increase from the crown to the widest point.I worked the chain 3 at the start of the increase row as normal, then worked those first two slip stitches through the chain and the corresponding stitches on the previous decrease section. I worked each increase row in this way to the tallest row, then worked the next decrease section as in the pattern and start to join again on the next increase and so on and so forth. The terms ‘length’ and ‘height’ are used interchangeably to describe the measurement from the base of the brim to the top of the crown. Different crochet hat styles I’m not dismissing this approach at all, but if I’m honest, the gather was always something that bothered me. It’s a problem I’ve been wanting to solve for a loooong time. Baby Items: Seed stitch is a lovely choice for baby items like blankets, cardigans, and baby hats. The texture is gentle on a baby’s delicate skin.
