About this deal

Step 4: drybrush Ryza Rust technical paint, or just some orange paint, onto the barricade. Use an old brush and really smash it in there.

I do this for a darker, richer gold than the Liberator Gold based recipe. There is nothing wrong with turning out Liberator Gold -> Agrax Wash -> Liberator Gold Drybrush -> Auric Gold Drybrush for a very bright gold, but I wanted a deeper gold.

Azure Magic: This is a vibrant turquoise metallic paint approved by Tzeentch. Would also be very suitable for Idoneth Deepkin. For their carapaces I used Karandras Green and applied Doomfire Magenta to their fleshier parts, while claws were painted with Blood Angels Red and the visible brain-like parts had Frostheart applied to them. I went old school on the basing and used a layer of Armageddon Dust which was then painted over with Warboss Green , washed in Biel-Tan Green and drybrushed with Niblet Green. Charlie: Custom Splinter Fleet Mix in a little more Mephiston Red and layer up again, concentrating on raised areas where light would hit Mix in a little more Cadian Fleshtone and layer up again, concentrating on raised areas where light would hit They actually look entirely different from the vehicles, but that works. For these guys the lore is that vehicles are out in the field and the toxic wasteland fighting for months at a time and are beaten to hell, and the infantry are either inside the vehicles or they are dead. You can see in this group shot that they all look fine standing side by side. In fact, the different paint schemes actually help, making the infantry pop rather than blending in to the vehicles behind them.

Step 5: Stipple the edges and some random rough patches with undiluted Burnt Sienna to simulate heavier rust. The left column was painted with Leadbelcher, the middle column with Ironbreaker and the left with Stormhost Silver. Each was then painted with 3 coats of gemstone paint to get even coverage. Then I finished them off with some Retributor Armor gold and a brown wash, just to finish them off a bit. Add a little Cadian Fleshtone to the The Fang and layer up, leaving the darker color in the recesses Tamiya paints come in acrylic or spray paint. The latter is terrific for a base coat as it’s unaffected by enamel or acrylic paints applied over it for finer detailing. In the Balthazar Gold example, the metallic flake appears much larger and gives a starry sky effect compared to white cap Retributor Gold, which has a much smoother appearance and the metallic flakes.

The remaining miniatures from the box were painted up to match my existing Tyranid force. I have quite a large army of these guys already, as well as a subservient Genestealer Cult, so I’ll be dropping these straight into that collection – which actually featured in the Crusade section of the previous Tyranids codex. Step 5: Once dry, run the barricade under hot water and use a stiff toothbrush to wash the salt off, repealing the ruddy primer underneath.
