About this deal

Whilst swimmer's ear is a form of Otitis externa, but classical otitis externa is not necessarily swimmer's ear, and can occur unrelated to swimming, such as in persons who probe their ears, diabetics etc. The fur seals and sealions from the southern hemisphere like those which live around Australia, belong to a group known as the eared seals or otariids. These seals have long, paddle-like front flippers which they use to 'fly' underwater. The researchers, based at Monash University but also including Museum scientists, found that both groups of seals were indeed using their flippers and tails to swim in different ways, but crucially that seals which used to swim with their tails can actually evolve to swim with their flippers, as is seen with Antarctic leopard seals. This article has tips on swimming with seals safely, but keeping the seals and their environment safe is also important.

If you’re experiencing severe pain, there’s a discharge or pus coming from your ear, or earache that lasts longer than three days, you should see your GP. If snorkelling you must be a strong swimmer and be confident in the water, we do not offer floatation devices but you can bring your own. While the animals in the sea may look cute, you need to consider the nature of the interaction, as, like any wild animal, they may not always welcome a stranger in their waters. And finally, share your experience with others! Tell your friends and family about your seal swim and spread the word about the importance of ocean wildlife conservation. The approach to preventing “water-related ear canal inflammation” with or without infection requires a major paradigm shift. When a swimmer develops a “water-related inflammation” of his ear canal, he will invariably be diagnosed and treated by his doctor or ENT as an inflammatory infection of the canal- regardless of the cause. In most cases a bacterial or fungal infection will not be demonstrated, but such treatment will in most cases resolve the problem until the next event. Seals tend to have their pups around Autumn, so cold water swimmers must be extra careful, as seals are extremely protective of their offspring. An eared seal is an important member of the marine mammal family Otariidae, one of three groupings of pinnipeds/ seals. commonly known either as sea lions or fur seals, distinct from true seals and the walrus. They rely mainly on a rowing motion of their front flippers for propulsion. Because they are able to turn their hind flippers forward, they can use all four limbs when moving on land. The streamlined bodies of seals feature four limbs which have been modified to function as flippers. Distribution

We’ll also provide tips on what to look for when selecting a tour operator, such as their certifications, safety measures, and eco-friendly practices. While there are many differences among the species, all seals have feet shaped like fins. In fact, the word pinniped means “fin-footed” in Latin. Those fin-shaped feet make them supreme swimmers, and all pinnipeds are considered semi-aquatic marine mammals.

We’ll also cover how to choose an ethical wildlife tour operator and what you can do to protect the environment and the animals in their natural habitat. Get ready to prepare for your adventure with our comprehensive guide! New research looking into how and why these two groups evolved such different swimming styles has combined anatomical and live animal observations with a team of engineers and computer simulations to figure out exactly what is going on.
