About this deal

This has been one of the biggest debate and wished for things ever since the UDM PRO was first announced. And they have added it to the Special addition - all 8 ports (6 are 802.3af and 2 are 802.3at) This really does make total sense as an addition that I could see becoming standard when the next version is released or certainly the ability to physically add the drive in after manufacturer if needed. It has POE! Calling out the specifics between the three – the UDM is a more self contained solution which is why it includes inbuilt Wi-Fi, but will also happily manage downstream devices.

If you don’t need PoE-enabled Ethernet ports at all, the UDM-Pro will probably be fine. But do note that its WAN Ethernet port is limited to 1 Gigabit Ethernet. The main benefit here really comes in a setup where there is beyond gigabit internet support with 2.5Gbps WAN. If you do not have/anticipate beyond gigabit internet speed anytime soon, these points may not be relevant. In case you're wondering, the storage space is not user-accessible. The UDM-SE doesn't function as a mini NAS server. In return, OpenVPN requires extra client software, making it less practical. But this protocol is the best if you want to be serious about VPN. L2TP/IPsec For Wi-Fi, you will need to get a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP) such as the Unifi 6 Liteor Unifi 6 Pro, both of which I use in my home. I also have a detailed comparison of the various Unifi WAPs.UniFi and AmpliFi are two major networking product lines from Ubiquiti. They serve two demographics and have different architectures. In fact, coupling the UDM-SE with the U6 Enterprise and you'll get a better Wi-Fi solution than the Dream Wall with a couple of hundred US dollars to spare. (The console can manage any UniFi APs via the Network application.)

Hardware-wise, it has more PoE ports, multi-Gigabit support, a larger internal storage option, and much higher capability. But software-wise, the two are identical since both are UniFi controllers. The combination of the Unifi Dream Machine SE and wireless access points provides an incredibly powerful home networking solution that is both secure and reliable. With this setup, you can easily create a robust Wi-Fi network that covers every corner of your home or office without having to worry about dead spots or slow speeds due to distance from the router. Plus, with advanced features like QoS prioritization and VLAN segmentation, you can ensure that all of your devices get the bandwidth they need when they need it most – making this setup perfect for streaming media content like movies or playing online games without lag or buffering issues. In terms of local throughput performance, I measured the UDM-SE's network ports by using a couple of transceivers, which might have adversely affected the console's network throughputs. We'll start by looking at all of the current options for UniFi gateways, including some older ones that Ubiquiti no longer lists on their official store. Current Gateways Both UDM-SE and UDM-Pro support Wireguard VPN now (earlier only the UDM-SE did). What else do you need to buy along with the UDM?

The Cloud Keys are different. They are not gateways or routers, they only run UniFi OS applications. I’m including them to make comparing which models run which UniFi OS applications easier. Cloud Keys require the use of the USG, USG-Pro, UXG-Lite, UXG-Pro, or some 3rd party router or firewall. The point is L2PT/IPsec is great when it works. And it does in most cases, which ultimately depends on whether the local network of the remote device allows it to pass through. PPTP The one situation that my Pro set up cannot do that SE can is dual WAN with both having beyond a full gigabit speed. I don’t even have dual WAN setup but even if I did, I doubt myself paying premium price for both lines as a home network user in any foreseeable future. Summary Besides the built-in Wi-Fi, the Dream Wall is practically the UDM-SE with a wall-mounting design and a larger touchscreen.Powered by UniFi OS, the UDM SE gives you full control of all your UniFi devices, including access points, Protect cameras, Talk phones, and Access readers. It's also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. Engineered for end-to-end simplicity, the UDM SE features an integrated Bluetooth radio that streamlines the initial setup and configuration process, which can be completed in minutes with the UniFi Network application (web or mobile). As a network controller, the UDM-SE has everything the UDR has and much more. You can run multiple applications with the UDM-SE, of which the Network app is the default. UID (UniFi Identity): A premium feature for enterprises that allows single sign-on across multiple hardware platforms and applications. Are you looking for the ultimate home networking solution? Look no further than the Unifi Dream Machine SE (UDM SE) and wireless access points. This powerful combination of hardware and software provides a comprehensive, secure, and reliable network for your home or small business. With the Unifi Dream Machine SE, you can easily set up a wireless network that covers your entire home or office. And with the addition of wireless access points, you can extend your coverage even further. Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition (UDM-SE): Representing the flexible non-Wi-Fi and “Enterprise of Things” approach

All UniFi Cloud Gateways, as of November 2023. These models are newer, and they all run UniFi OS. They have been called UniFi OS Consoles, Gateway Consoles, and now Cloud Gateways. They act as routers or firewalls, and also run the UniFi software applications like Network and Protect. These can’t be used with Cloud Keys, cloud services, or a self-hosted UniFi Network application. The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition is designed for high speed home and business internet connections with dual wan (10G SFP+ and 2.5GbE RJ45 ports). Unlike the UDM & UDM-PRO the Special Edition (UDM-SE) includes 8 PoE capable ports allowing the UDM-SE to power cameras, phones and access points alike. I’m also getting the U6 enterprise as I have a smart home and the 2.4Ghz network is getting congested (not sure if it will help as most smart sensors have very basic radios but let’s see).Wireguard is the latest VPN protocol. Debuted in 2016, initially only for Linux, but since 2020 has been available cross-platform (Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, Android). Both the UDM-Pro and UDM-SE are great choices as the heart of your home/office network. By not integrating a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP), you are free to mix and match any number of WAPs as needed. The UDM SE or Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition has now been released, and we can take our first look at this brand new device. You can get Wi-Fi 7 router today, but the standard is not yet ready, and nobody knows how exactly it will be when it's eventually certified.
