About this deal

In our years of working with monitors, we've observed that a monitor's refresh rate is a critical factor in determining its overall performance. Refresh rate refers to the number of times the display updates the picture being displayed per second. A higher refresh rate means the screen is updated more frequently, resulting in a smoother, more fluid motion and less motion blur. However, screen size also plays a role in the gaming experience. A bigger screen allows you to see more detail at a more comfortable size. While a high resolution is important for detail and crispness, a bigger screen allows you to see that detail at a more comfortable size. For example, a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 1440p (3440 x 1440) will let you see a lot more detail than a 1080p (1920 x 1080) monitor of the same size. The numbers in the resolution stand for the number of pixels per line. So a 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor would have over 2 million pixels total. The storage temperature shows the range from a minimum to a maximum temperature, within which storing of the display is considered to be safe. The static contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce simultaneously, for example, within one and the same frame/scene. The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC.

For instance, the LG 27UL650 monitor has the DisplayHDR 400 badge because it has a peak brightness of 400-nits, whereas the VG289Q has a maximum luminance of 350-nits. Keep in mind that for PC gaming, 4K UHD is very demanding, so unless you have a high-end GPU, we recommend going with a more economical 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate. Based on our analysis, the Asus 28" VG289Q and Asus 28" VG289Q1A monitors both have a 90% DCI-P3 color gamut, which we found was excellent for gaming.Compatible with industry-standard HDR10 high dynamic range for color and brightness levels that exceed the capabilities of ordinary monitors. The ASUS VG289Q supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), but it doesn’t even carry VESA’s entry-level DisplayHDR 400 certification. In truth, this certification is meaningless anyway. ASUS also offers the VividPixel and ASCR (dynamic contrast ratio) features, which we recommend turning off for the best picture quality.

Based on our analysis, the Asus 28" VG289Q and Asus 28" VG289Q1A monitors both have a refresh rate of 5 ms, which we found was good for gaming. Other monitors using the same panel include the Acer CB282K and the Samsung U28R550. They offer similar image quality and performance, but different features and designs. When we fired up the HDR title Call of Duty: WWII on the Asus TUF Gaming VG289Q we saw a little better delineation between the darkest and lightest areas of the image. In a basement, for example, dark corners looked suitably mysterious while highlights, like from lanterns and flashlights, came to the fore. The extra color was apparent as well with nicely saturated reds and slightly more vivid greens and blues.DCI P3 is a color space, introduced in 2007 by the SMPTE. It is used in digital cinema and has a much wider gamut than the sRGB. SDR content, on the other hand, will look great! High pixel density ensures vivid and crisp details, while the colors are accurate, consistent and vibrant. The ASUS VG289Q was one of the first 4K IPS monitors to be available as a 28″ variant, with most alternatives with similar specifications being 27″.

Information about whether the stand can be dismounted. Usually, this is required for wall mounting.

EXTREME LOW MOTION BLUR

Even if you have a powerful graphics card, you should consider acquiring a higher refresh rate display for games as it makes for a lot more enjoyable gaming experience.

The percentage of the approximate area, taken by the active part of the screen, to the total front area. Change settings in monitor before switching to HDR mode in Windows, because you cannot change any monitor settings in HDR mode. (choose different modes in "GameVisual" category, I think Cinema Mode and Racing Mode or something allows you to change brightness, contrast, and even saturation.) We tried using the dynamic contrast option, called ASCR, for SDR gameplay. It worked subtly and didn’t clip shadow and highlight detail, like similar features on most monitors do. ASCR gave the image a tiny bit more dimension, so we left it on for all our hands-on tests. Unfortunately, ASCR isn’t available in HDR mode. It offers an immersive picture quality with crisp details and rich colors as well as smooth performance thanks to fast response time and FreeSync. Specifications Screen SizeInformation about whether there is a possibility for wall mounting according to the VESA Mounting Interface Standard (MIS). The storage humidity shows the lower and upper humidity limit, which ensures safe storage of the display. Storing it outside these limits might damage the display. The picture quality is excellent out of the box, though you might want to decrease the brightness a bit.
