About this deal

In general, a plump abdomen can signal good egg producing ovaries and a full spermatheca. However, due to genetic issues at play – you may have a slimmer one that becomes an egg laying machine. How are New Queens Made?

The queen bee is born from an egg, just like in the other types of bees. However, she will be born in a particularly large cell compared to the rest. Once the egg is hatched, the larval stage of the queen bee is the active feeding stage before metamorphosis. It occurs 3 to 5 days after laying the egg. All the larvae are fed by royal jelly for the first 3 days. This is manufactured by the worker bees from their hypopharyngeal gland. The worker bees only take around 3 weeks to go through the whole metamorphosis from egg to adult honeybee. The male drones take a few days longer, while a queen can be produced in just a little over 2 weeks! The queen has the shortest development time in the whole hive- this could be because of the special attention she receives. The Bilberry bumble bee is a specialist feeder bee, whose primary food source is bilberries, bell heather and birds foot trefoil legumes. Unlike the other females in the colony, she does not have pollen baskets. This is because she does not leave the hive to gather pollen or nectar. Do Queens Have Stingers?

One hive can produce 60 lb (27 kg) or more in a good season, however an average hive would be around 25 lb (11 kg) surplus. Because a developing queen bee is larger, she requires a larger cell for growth and development. These large cells are called queen cells. Did you know that bees pollinate one third of the world's food source and are responsible for almost every fruit and vegetable we eat? When bees go, all of our food will go with them - so they really are important! The UK has also seen a massive decline in its bee species. In the UK alone, the honey bee population has dropped by more than 45% since 2010 and three species of bumblebees have gone extinct.
