As well as being the UK's most successful picture book author, Julia Donaldson is a gifted songwriter for children. A Treasury of Songs contains over twenty of her songs, including fun-fille... Read more Julia Donaldson was born in Hampstead, London and studied French and Drama at Bristol University. Whilst at university she would write songs and plays and perform them in the street with her friends. By 1971 she got a job at a publishing house whilst being an active part of Bristol Street theatre at the weekends, where the group would regularly perform in playgrounds in underprivileged housing estates. Julia Donaldson’s most famous story is The Gruffalo. A mouse walking through the forest has to evade being eaten by some fearsome predators. To scare them off, he tells each in turn that he’s on his way to eat with his friend, the fearsome Gruffalo. The mouse doesn’t think the Gruffalo exists, or does it? Children across the world love this modern classic. It’s been made into a hit BBC One animated film, a stage play, and a ride at Chessington World of Adventures. But one wild and windy night the Gruffalo's child disobeys her father's warnings and ventures ... Read more

Creating this series was my favourite kind of challenge. Almost every word in every book had to be phonically decodable, and yet I wanted to write proper stories which children would enjoy reading. I also wanted them to be really varied, as I know how children’s tastes differ. So some of the stories are in prose, some in rhyme, some are realistic and others fantastical. There are a few non-fiction titles, a play and a quiz, and the books are illustrated by a wonderful variety of artists. I think my favourite characters are Spike who says he can dive, drive and feed wild lions, and a kleptomaniac kangaroo called Sue who comes to school and steals the spoons and glue.

George wished he wasn't the scruffiest giant in town. So when he sees a new shop selling giant-sized clothes, he decides it's time for a new look: smart trousers, smart shirt, stripy tie, shiny shoes. Now he's the smartest giant in town . . . until he bumps into some animals who desperately need his help – and his clothes! These books revise the long vowel sounds and spelling patterns taught in Stage 4, and all the short vowels and consonants taught in previous stages. Book 6 also features oo as in food. Push, pull and slide the moving mechanisms to bring the story to life in this brilliant board book based on the classic picture book A Squash and a Squeeze by the creators of The Gruff... Read more

Read more Meet the friends from Acorn Wood in this colourful tabbed board book, based on the bestselling preschool series, Tales from Acorn Wood. To this day Donaldson continues to write children's books ever since The Gruffalo was first published in 1999. There’s a Julia Donaldson book for every child aged 0-5. It’s not really a case of which one should you choose, but which one first? After graduating from Bristol University in 1970 with a 2:1 in Drama and French, Donaldson had various jobs throughout the 70s, sometimes simultaneously. Primarily she wrote songs for BBC Children’s Television, for shows such as Play Away, Play School and Watch With Mother. She also worked as an editor for publishers including Michael Joseph and Robert Tyndall. In 1974 she moved to Brighton and performed in the local folk club scene with Malcolm. She devised plays for children, ran a Saturday-morning workshop, and composed two children’s musicals. She worked for Radio Bristol and for two years as a teacher until 1978 - her last full-time employment. Their first son, Hamish, was born in 1978.There’s Julia Donaldson’s Songbirds for children learning to read, part of the Read with Oxford line. Part of the bestselling reading scheme, these books will take children from phonics right up to becoming confident, independent readers. They’re the perfect accompaniment to the Biff, Chip & Kipper series.
