Fans ofSpanish foodand old-time charm would do well to visitLa Orotava, an unspoiled town perched on a steep hill above Puerto de la Cruz. Blessed with statelymansions, ancient churches and cobbled streets, it’s also home to an abundance of beautiful local restaurants. So, where are we? Which resort will you choose for your holiday? It’s a tough choice, but if we had to put it into words we’d say: The Canary Islands are popular with those looking for winter sun, with average temperatures over 20 degrees at this time of year. This trip was what we’d describe as a “working holiday”. We weren’t invited or hosted, we booked and paid for the trip, and planned everything meticulously to cover as much as we could in a week. To experience Tenerife’s jaw-dropping crowning glory, head inland through cool pine forests to Teide National Park, home to the eponymous iconic volcano, and Spain’s highest peak. The epic lunar landscape around Mount Teide is best seen from a cable car in the companyof a local guide as part of a wider island tour. Nowhere else is the Canary Islands’ volcanic genesis more dramatically evident than on Lanzarote. Jagged lava formations, stark volcanic cones and craters all the shades of sunset create a unique and unforgettable landscape. Even the vineyards look otherworldly, with vibrant green vines sprouting with implausible vigour from the ashy, lunar terrain. Family-owned Pensión Enriqueta (+34 928 842 051, doubles €35) is one of La Graciosa’s tourism pioneers, with cheery, rustic rooms in Caleta de Sebo. Puerto del Carmen is the nightlife hub of Lanzarote and if you are looking for somewhere to dance into the small hours in a club environment then head there. Costa Teguise is quieter but still has a handful of decent venues, such as the Krazy Lounge that are worth seeking out. There´s regular live jazz at Jazz Mi Madre, close to the Pueblo Marinero and loads of bars and restaurants. But if you´re expecting anything really lively you´ll be disappointed. Where to EatSpain is well known for its amazing wines and this tailor-made trip to The Lands of Wine allows you to explore two famous regions: Ribera del Duero and La Rioja. Four different wineries, from traditional to modern, and many restaurants on the way await your visit. Costa Teguise is a man made resort, created in the 1970’s around the beautiful sandy beach of Las Cucharas. It’s much more compact than Puerto del Carmen, and is completely flat, so ideal if you have walking issues. The island has plenty to offer, including great weather, almost 100 beaches and fantastic scenery.It is home to the many creations of the famous local artist and architect Cesar Manrique, who created six Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism which fuse the rugged landscapes with his own amazing creativity. Car Hire in Lanzarote means you can view these appealing features with ease. Punta Mujeres also happens to be home to one of the prettiest and most characterful houses on the island. The standard local greeting is a kiss on both cheeks, but handshakes are fine too especially if they know that you are a tourist. The entire island of La Palma has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve for its remarkable scenery - some parts are dramatically volcanic, and others are lushly forested. It’s no wonder that the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands is known as bothLa Isla Bonita (The Beautiful Island) and La Isla Verde (The Green Island). Although many of the activities revolve around the beach, with windsurfing in particular being very well catered for (as a result of the wind here), there isplenty moreto do in and around Costa Teguise than just soak up the sun. Costa Teguise Beaches Explore Lanzarote's towns and villages online - with guides to all of the key places on the island from Arrieta to Yaiza.We went on a mix of off-road routes and main roads, with my favourite part being the road through La Geria (the wine region). Seeing the volcanoes and unique vineyards from our open-sided car was pretty awesome! Going off road on a buggy tour of Lanzarote Outside the main resorts, you can choose to stay in the bustling capital, Arrecife, full of local flavour, or head for one of the pretty whitewashed villages inland or on the coast, where fincas and private rentals are on offer. If you are hiring a car and exploring the island it´s highly likely that you will be passing through Teguise at some stage as it is en route to many attractions in the North and in quite close proximity to the beach at Famara. Tias Surf-friendly Famara beach in the north is one of the Canaries’ most beautiful, and you can do day trips to the dazzling beaches at Punta del Papagayo in the south. Don’t miss the natural pools in Punta Mujeres and, time permitting, all-natural Playa del Risco (accessible by a one-hour hike), or Los Caletones coves near Órzola.
Many tourists choose to base themselves in Costa Teguise on the eastern coast of the island. The town is a proper holiday resort, with lots of bars, restaurants, cafes, accommodation of all types and a big sandy beach. Playa Quemada As well as a few outdoor terraces for unobstructed views across the water, there’s a café inside the building. We grabbed coffees here and sat looking out at the views. Get out and discover historic towns such as Teguise, the former island capital and home to a treasure trove of colonial architecture. Explore the modern metropolis of Arrecife. You can drive most of the way up and then ramblearound the volcanic mound on foot. Blanketed in dense Canarian pine woods, and zigzagged with deep ravines, the park is a picture-perfect paradise for ramblers. Costa Teguiseoffers arange of hotels, from three star though to the five star luxury of the Hotel Gran Melia Salinas (pictured left). One of the best ways to explore Costa Teguise is to take a stroll along the seafront promenade, which will take you past all of the five main beaches and towards the Las Maretas Palace, originally built for King Hussein of Jordan and now used by visiting dignitaries such as the King of Spain and former Prime Minister Zapatero, who is a regular visitor to the island. Costa Teguise Weather Playa Blanca’s typical visitors are a mixture of young families and middle aged couples. Other Areas Once a small fishing village, tourist developments now stretch for 7km along the coast to within a few hundred metres of the Airport runway. These developments have remained mostly low-rise, and painted traditional white, thanks to the efforts of the late local artist, Cesar Manrique. Puerto del Carmen is set up for all types of visitors, however, and there’s plenty to do and enjoy for families and the older generation. Base yourself in the rugged north, where low-key fishing villages – Arrieta, Punta Mujeres, La Santa, Órzola – and major works by the Lanzarote-born artist César Manrique await, including the Casa-Museo César Manrique (in leafy, historical Haría) and the Jameos del Agua.Last (but not least) in our guide to the best Canary Islands comes rustic El Hierro - the smallest andmost south-westerly island in the archipelago is also the hardest to get to, and the least set-up for tourists. Playa Pocillos: a tidal lagoon means that there is a large patch of sand to walk across to get to the sea. As for Las Palmas itself? At once a majorcommercial hub, historical centre, cosmopolitan resort, and essential seaport, this isarguably the most beguiling of Canarian capitals.Adorned with attractive museums and galleries, it’s a stunning place to amble an afternoon with aninformed Canary Islands travel guidetaking you on an Old Town walking tour. Now largely ignored by tourists — other than for the Sunday Market — it remains a great place to visit during the week, as it boasts some excellent architecture and remains relatively tranquil.
