About this deal

Zinnser BIN shellac primer is stinky but not nearly as bad as many oil-based primers. It has a super fast dry time (for an average-sized kitchen, the first door will be dry enough to handle before the last door is done!) My favourite feature of Zinnser Bin, however, is how smoothly and easily you can sand it for a super smooth finish and professional results. The Best Primer for Cabinets! An important note:if you’re painting over a paintable silicone caulk, you should use an oil based paint for this project.Oil based paints will adhere better than latex paint or acrylic paint. Non paintable silicone caulk can’t be painted over. You unfortunately can’t paint untreated silicone caulk unless it’s primed first, or if it’s a special paintable silicone caulk formula.

You can use latex paint or oil-based paint over shellac primer. These primers are water-soluble and so are easy to clean. They also come in low- or no-VOC formulas, making them a healthier alternative to oil-based and shellac primers. Shellac Primer Before we get into methods for painting over caulking, can you paint over silicone caulk at all? Unfortunately, you can’t really paint over silicone caulk, unless its a siliconized acrylic latex caulk. That being said a lot of painters do spray this shellac-based primer and have great results, they say it sprays really nicely due to its very watery consistency. I do think if you spray it, you need to ensure that you do a very light coat so it doesn’t drip.

There are some instances where a different primer might give you decent results but there are very few instances where oil primer won’t work. It’s great for wood, laminate, previously painted surfaces, and all the things. Once you have your paintable caulk and caulking gun, consider removing all the old silicone caulk before applying a fresh sealant. This will allow for the strongest, most long-lasting seal. If you're not sure whether existing paint is oil-based or latex, saturate a rag with alcohol or fingernail polish remover and wipe a small section of the area. If the paint is latex, you should have a bit of paint on the rag after you've wiped. If the paint is oil-based, it won't be affected.

If you don’t keep your hand stays steel from too much shaking, cover the outside area using painter’s tape so you can avoid caulking non-painted areas. Apply Paintable Caulk Over the Old Caulk You can also remove the current caulk and apply new paintable caulk, which can then be painted. Final Thoughts You can speed up the work using a caulking gun. Take a scissor to cut the caulk tip and put it into the caulking gun. Now aim it where you want to cover. Start pressing the gun from a line and slowly fill it with the paintable silicone caulk. Note: Protect anything in the surrounding area that you don’t plan on painting with painter’s tape. Step 2: Let it dry for 30-45 minutes.

If you have ever spoken with professional painters, they will tell you that prep work is the most important step to any paint job and takes the most time. Painting kitchen cabinets is no exception, it super critical to get the prep right for a durable long-term finish. Let’s see what you need to do to paint over silicone caulking. True Method For Painting Over Silicone Caulk Use of Shellac Spray PrimerNot thoroughly cleaning before priming– dust, debris, bacon grease. Dirt and debris between your primer coat and your surface will prevent a proper bond, so make sure you clean really thoroughly before you start priming. Once again, the key to painting a surface like this is using the right primer. An Oil Primer is going to be the best for this, and once again I do recommend my beloved Zinsser BIN Shellac Based Primer. Then top them with the right paint (see below) and you will have the best finish that will last for years to come. I’m making (or buying) my own cabinet doors – how do I paint Raw MDF?
