I may not be a huge Elise Kova fan, but I really love and appreciate the bonus scenes she adds to every book in this series. I don't know if she does it with her other books as well (I haven't read them), but it's really cool, nonetheless. They are always entertaining and cute. I may even like them more than the actual books sometimes. So far, I am really enjoying the work of Elise Kova. Even though her writing style feels slightly long-winded, she has a way of bringing normal or overdone things to life. Floriane is our main character who, along with her mother, is a forge maiden. A rare and vital part of the town. They forge the weapons of silver to defend themselves against the vampires. As for Ruvan, I definitely expected a different type/personality of vampire, so his character was a bit of a surprise. He’s interesting and open and just wanting to do the right thing – whatever that may be.

Each of them deal with inner demons and prejudice that prevent them from devoting themselves fully to the other person. Leading to lots of intimate moments followed by “I shouldn’t have done that” regret and anger scenes. I admit that I am getting a little tired of reading the same premise over and over again, but I am too invested in the story to stop and will probably read the entire series for the hell of it. The second is that the vampire have only one true weakness – silver. All other tools are merely meant to slow them. Or give their victims clean deaths.However the real twist is something I hadn’t seen coming until the moment it happened, then suddenly it all made sense. When the truth is finally revealed, you’ll never see it coming. I pride myself in guessing what’s going to happen and I fell hook, line, and sinker for all of Elise Kova’s misdirects. I believed exactly what the characters believed, albeit I came to those deductions earlier than the characters. The final truth is that the vampires share one mind. The beasts that torment us month to month are little more than living golems that heed their lord’s will. If the vampire lord is felled, the rest of his spawn will follow.
