About this deal

Battery life is the biggie. It’s now unusual to get an old-school NiMH battery that runs out in less than two weeks and takes most of a day to charge, but they still exist. More modern lithium-ion batteries will give you two to four weeks of brushing – or more – without a recharge, and will take anywhere between three and 12 hours to reach full capacity. I place the toothbrush 6 inches away from a decibel meter. The toothbrush is held in my hand with a light grip. I turn the toothbrush on and run it through all cleaning modes and intensity settings available. Slim, sonic and sustainable, that’s the Suri toothbrush in a nutshell. It was born out of frustration at the four million electric toothbrushes which end up in landfill per year thanks to unrecyclable plastic parts. Suri’s answer? A sturdy aluminium frame, plant-based cornstarch heads, and castor oil bristles.

Made from aluminum with an inner steel core, it’s not a perfect cylinder. Wider than it is deep, there is some curvature but squared sides give a more industrial appearance and makes it feel solid and secure in hand.

Why is an electric toothbrush so noisy?

The lightweight, ergonomic design and small brush head make this toothbrush easy to maneuver around your dog's mouth. It is entirely waterproof and rechargeable for cordless convenience during brushing sessions. In my own testing, I took an Oral-B Smart 1500 that produces 75 decibels and wrapped it as best as I could with a towel. The sound it produced dropped by just 5 decibels to 70. If you notice any strange sounds or odd performance from your brush it may well pay to get it inspected. Do this if you can within the warranty period to limit any potential costs. The age of the brush This wrapping around the toothbrush is designed to deaden the sound. A towel, wash cloths or t-shirt are examples of what you could use. In addition to the motor you have other parts such as cogs and gears that all contribute to the operation of a toothbrush and are all susceptible to having an impact on the noise too.

One handy feature which we hadn’t seen in the iO4 is the brush head replacement reminder. An orange LED light at the bottom of the control panel will flash when the brush head needs to be changed. The top of the handle also has a pressure sensor, flashing green or red according to how hard you’re pressing.

Does a quiet toothbrush always mean higher quality?

Personally I prefer Polish mode, which offers a stronger and more intense cleaning sensation. It suits more experienced users as it offers 33,000 vibrations per minute vs the 25,000 of Everyday clean. Pressure sensors: Pressure sensors act as a safety measure, says Dr. Dmitry Dolgov, a dentist at The Dentist Lounge in Santa Monica, California. They alert you when you’re brushing too hard and eliminate the chance that you’ll hurt your gums or tooth enamel. If an electric toothbrush senses that you’re exerting too much pressure while brushing, it may slow down its oscillations or display a red light on its base, which tells you to be gentler.

Setting it up was a breeze and highly intuitive; no manual consultation was needed. One button for the setting, another to power it on, and adjusting intensity mid-brush was easy. The handle design, reminiscent of our older Sonicare, made maneuvering easy. The brush head size was perfect, offering comfort and efficient coverage. The Oral-B iO Series 5 toothbrush is an excellent choice for sensitive teeth, thanks to its specialized sensitivity modes and gentle brushing experience. The toothbrush offers multiple settings (sensitive, extra sensitive, intense, polish) and various intensity levels. Initially, we thought the toothbrush might be too thin, but it was just right for reaching all areas comfortably, and the brush head size suited our needs. Whilst it doesn’t directly affect the actual sound that the brush itself makes, it can affect the perception of the sound. Pressure sensor – Brushing too hard can damage your gums and tooth enamel and harsh scrubbing to remove plaque is not necessary – in fact, pushing too hard against your teeth can do more harm than good. Pressure sensors let you know if you’re pressing too hard, with either a light or beeping sound. Some Oral B models will stop pulsing and just rotate if you’re putting too much pressure on your teeth. Although no clinical trials have yet compared it directly to other sonic brushes, these results are on par with the competition. A low and high power setting for a gentle or intense cleanHowever, finding the best toothbrush for you can be a minefield. Not only do all the toothbrushes look nigh-on identical, but the manufacturers seem to have decided that confusion is good for business, producing several different ranges with different characteristics all at the same time. It’s hard to distinguish between so many similar products, while the boxes and adverts bombard you with pseudo-science and marketing-speak. After each use, rinse the toothbrush head and handle and if possible dry off with a towel or at worst leave it in a well ventilated space. Experts recommend changing your brush heads every three to four months. That's because bristles start to wear out and become more abrasive on your gums. I want to love it, but I’m not sure I do, as the head is quite wide which makes it hard to reach all the nooks and crannies - although it has been streamlined from the ISSA 2. It has a huge range of 16 different speed settings, although they’re not separated into dedicated ‘modes’ as such, and I actually found that 16 is too many. It has an interval timer, which prompts you to move to a different area of your mouth every 30 seconds for a thorough clean, but again no pressure sensor.

The supplied 1 year warranty falls below the 2 years that are now pretty standard from the major manufacturers. The toothbrush uses sonic technology, although it pulses at a lower frequency than the more expensive models above (40,000 pulses per minute). However, my teeth were still left feeling squeaky clean, and I especially liked how the brush has a central silicone bristle to help with removing surface stains.

Function Vs. Style

Seven cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, gum care, intense clean, whitening, super sensitive and tongue clean) The reason I love this toothbrush so much is the intuitive design coupled with the fact that I can feel the deep-cleaning effects (the closest I’ve got to a hygienist-standard clean at home). Even though it cleans powerfully, it doesn’t feel too harsh on my gums. It also has a remarkably long-lasting battery – I started by testing it daily for four weeks and only had to charge it once in that time. It’s definitely won a permanent place in my bathroom cabinet.
