About this deal

The Sapphire Cosworth, being based on a different shell to the original three-door Cosworth, along with its more discreet rear wing, recorded a drag co-efficient of 0.33, thus allowing it to register slightly better performance figures (top speed of 150mph and 0-60 of 6.1 seconds) compared to the original Cosworth. Could YOU claim pension credit? Claims have spiked as bills soar, so what are the rules - and why might you get refused?

The RS500 was announced in July 1987 and had a mechanically uprated Cosworth engine (more similar to the one to be used in competition), with power boosted to 224bhp, modified bodywork and the cachet of being hand-assembled - the RS500 really is the ultimate 1980s Fast Ford! December 1982 –Sierra XR4i available, featuring 150bhp 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine, sports styling with double rear spoiler and unusual three-door bodywork with split rear side windows. In January 1990 the third generation Sierra RS Cosworth was launched, this time with four wheel drive. As early as 1987, Mike Moreton and Ford Motorsport had been talking about a four-wheel drive Sierra RS Cosworth that could make Ford competitive in the World Rally Championship. The Ferguson MT75 gearbox that was considered an essential part of the project wasn't available until late 1989 however. He knew what he wanted but took the precaution of enlisting the help of a friend who was a marque expert, Silverstone Auctions told us.

Hagerty’s John Mayhead added: “As we have written many times in recent months, the demand for high-quality 1980s and 1990s performance cars is stronger than ever, driven by Generation X buyers (born 1965 to 1980) who are reaching peak earning potential.

As always with Inno64, there is a great precision in the release. All the tampo work is fine, neat and precise. The incrustation of the rear spoiler is as good as a 1/43 Spark replica at €69.95, and except some logos or plates sometimes a bit sideways, everything is top level. In the UK, the RHD 1988-1989 Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworths are badged with small "Sapphire" badges on the rear door window trims. All 1988-1989 LHD models are badged and registered as Sierra RS Cosworths with no Sapphire nomenclature at all. "Sapphire" being viewed as a Ghia trim level that saw power rear windows, air conditioning and other minor options. Our feature car is one of the most original examples around, yet even it has had the Stage 1 tune – a simple remap that’s said to be better for the engine, which otherwise is a little strangled in standard form. A Cosworth should be reliable, dependable transport, although minor electrical issues can have a massive impact.

Sierra headlinings are prone to sagging (and can be repaired relatively cheaply), as are rear parcel shelves (which cost a bomb); a Cosworth should have a single-piece shelf with a plastic storage box (designed for a non-standard first aid kit). The original Ford Sierra RS Cosworth three-door is ultra-cool, immensely tuneable and extremely desirable. Here’s how to buy a bank-beating investment that’s equally able to annihilate your wallet… I figured we had more cars than we could deal with anyway, so I swapped both the BMW and the Rolls-Royce for the Cosworth, transferred Dad’s private numberplate onto it, and had a long think about how I was going to break the news to my parents. Around fourteen years ago, our vendor, a knowledgeable and particularly fastidious enthusiast, decided that he would like to add an RS500 to his Collection. He knew what he wanted but took the precaution of enlisting the help of a friend who was a marque expert. They considered a number of cars, including some lovely examples, but were focused on finding the best RS500 they possibly could. A number of other contenders were rejected until, one day, E378 TKN appeared and was unquestionably 'the one'. Its originality was unmatched, the mileage was nominal (even today it has only covered 5,192 miles) and it had patently been cared for.It was already a fast car, but as a former biker I needed it to be as fast as possible,’ said Clarke, ‘so I took it to Beverley Motorsport in Hull and had the ECU remapped to liberate 310bhp. Rust is a serious Sierra problem, but by now most three-door Cossies have been restored or in need of very little work. But don’t take it for granted; even a low-mileage or renovated car requires a thorough inspection. Too sweet a deal to resist... But Hotel Chocolat selling out to Mars leaves a very bad taste, says ALEX BRUMMER Blimey. Who doesn’t want a three-door Ford Sierra RS Cosworth? It’s the most iconic car of a generation, and even the name sends shivers down the spine of any true petrolhead. As shown on the odometer here, the Sierra Cossie RS500 has covered just 5,192. That works out at an average of 144 miles each year since new in 1987

The waiting time gave Ford Motorsport a good opportunity to conduct extensive testing and demand improvements. One example was the return of the bonnet louvres. According to Ford's own publicity material, 80% of the engine parts were also modified. The improved engine was designated YBG for cars with a catalytic converter and YBJ for cars without. The former had the red valve cover replaced by a green one, to emphasize the environmental friendliness. Four wheel drive and an increasing amount of equipment had raised the weight by 100kg, and the power was therefore increased to just about compensate for this. Therefore, an official request for a turbocharged version (designated Cosworth YBB) capable of 180 HP on the street and 300 HP in race trim, was placed. Cosworth answered positively, but they put up two conditions: the engine would produce not less than 150kW (204 HP) in the street version, and Ford had to accept no fewer than 15,000 engines. Turner's project would only need about 5,000 engines, but Ford nevertheless accepted the conditions. The extra 10,000 engines would later become one of the reasons Ford also chose to develop a four-door, second generation, Sierra RS Cosworth.Silverstone Auctions said before the auction on Saturday that 'the attention to the detail of this car's maintenance cannot be understated' Silverstone Auctions said before the event that although the car had been very lightly used during the vendor's tenure, it was regularly serviced and maintained during this period by Tremona Garage of Southampton, a local specialist widely recognised as being hugely knowledgeable when it comes to Fords from the seventies, eighties and nineties. Other digits on the VIN plate should read N5 for engine, B (right-hand drive) for drive, J for trans, 3 for axle, S2 for trim, and BEF in the type box.
