About this deal

The trophy, originally dubbed Victory and commonly called the Coupe du Monde (French for World Cup), was 35cm in height and weighed 3.8kg. It was constructed with gold-plated sterling silver and it had a blue base made of semi-precious stone called lapis lazuli. Before the 2018 tournament, over 220,000 people across Russia and the world had the canoe to see the iconic trophy with their own eyes. I was fortunate to see it myself in 2018 while in Phuket, Thailand. The Cup used to be kept by the winning team until the final draw of the next tournament, however, that is no longer the case. Instead the winners of the tournament receive a bronze replica which is gold-plated rather than solid gold. Likewise, three-time winners keep the replica instead of the original cup. [18] Germany became the first nation to win the new trophy for the third time when they won the 2014 FIFA World Cup. [29] Argentina became the second nation to achieve this feat following their win in Qatar at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Concerns about the safety of the Jules Rimet Trophy during World War II led to an unlikely destination for the much coveted prize for the duration of the conflict. The Jules Rimet Cup was the original trophy of the FIFA World Cup. Originally called "Victory", but generally known simply as the World Cup or Coupe du Monde, it was renamed in 1946 to honour the FIFA President Jules Rimet, who in 1929 passed a vote to initiate the competition. It was designed by French sculptor Abel Lafleur and made of gold-plated sterling silver on a lapis lazuli base. [4] In 1954 the base was replaced with a taller version to accommodate more winner's details. It stood 35centimetres (14in) high and weighed 3.8kilograms (8.4lb). [5] He suggested that the theft must have occurred during “an aversion of human eyes.” The exhibition was on two floors in a large hall and there were “at least two to four guards circulating the hall at the time.” Instead, the FIFA World Cup winners from each year get to permanently keep a gold-plated bronze replica, referred to as the FIFA World Cup Winners’ Trophy, for every tournament they win. There were gold plates attached to each of the four sides of the base, on which the winning countries’ names were engraved after each edition. The Jules Rimet Trophy. (Getty Images)Famously, the trophy was engraved with the winner’s name before they received it and there was much speculation as to when the engraver was sure enough of the outcome to begin. Only once did he made a mistake: in 1999, when Jean van de Velde infamously choked with a triple bogey on the 18th hole. Paul Lawrie subsequently won the playoff and the engraver had to scratch through van de Velde’s name. The winning golfer’s name is now only added after his scorecard is verified by officials. The trophy stayed safe under Barassi’s bed until the World Cup returned after WWII in 1950 in Brazil. Barassi, who was integral to Italy hosting the 1938 edition, also spearheaded the operations for hosting the 1950 edition. Over the years, there have been two different iterations or designs of the football World Cup trophy.

He and his colleagues were soon given an opportunity to express their thoughts to their eight or nine police officers who arrived within minutes. The old trophy’s exciting journey didn’t end there as it ended up being stolen on a couple of occasions. The first incident took place in England ahead of the 1966 World Cup. The Jules Rimet Trophy was put on a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall on 20 March 1966, when the theft took place. The trophy presented to the men’s singles winner at the first Wimbledon Championship in 1877 cost 25 guineas and was given to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club by J. H. Walsh, editor of The Field. Six years later, it was retired when William Renshaw, a three-times winner, was permitted under rules to take it home with him. In 1886, Renshaw, having won another three consecutive competitions, also kept the new Challenge Cup. Following the retirement of the Jules Rimet Trophy, FIFA needed a new cup. The soccer’s governing body invited proposals and received submissions from fifty-three sculptors from seven different countries. Eventually, Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga’s design was selected by FIFA as their new World Cup trophy. The second theft took place while the Victory trophy was in Brazil’s custody. After Brazil received the guardianship of the trophy, it was kept on public display in a bulletproof case at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Even though four men were convicted of the crime, the 3.8kg trophy was never recovered. It is widely believed that the gold-plated sterling silver trophy has been melted and sold.
