About this deal

To remove some Freehub bodies (or a freewheel), the hub must be spoked into a wheel. However, the most usual kind of Shimano Freehub body can be removed from a bare hub if a cassette is installed. The fixing bolt which holds the FreeHub body can't be fully tightened when replacing the body, though, unless the hub is spoked into a wheel.

Are the shims trapped underneath the bearing balls? If so, you will have to remove the bearing balls before you can remove a shim, and replace shims before installing bearing balls. You can remove the bearing balls with a magnet, or turn the freewheel over far enough to spill out the bearing balls, while holding the outer body so it doesn't fall off. If you have either SRAM or Shimano components, you can use cassettes from either brand without compatibility issues, as long as you're not changing the whole groupset. 5. Do freewheels wear out?

In reality, the fancier parts aren't always the most suitable, in the same way that a Ferrari, while it is a great racecar, isn't at all as good for daily transportation as a Toyota -- there are practical issues of cost, reliability, serviceability and durability. With bicycle components, the performance gain with higher-end models is often minuscule. Remember, you account for 80 percent of the weight even if you are riding a rather heavy bicycle! Triple" front derailers have a wide, shaped inner cage plate. They generally work OK with double chainrings as long as the step between the chainring sizes is matched to the derailer. Shimano Freehubs dating from the mid 1980s onward have replaceable bodies, held onto the hub shell by screw threads and, usually, splines. A French freewheel may start to thread onto an ISO/British/Italian hub but will soon bind. In practice this "problem" almost never materializes. Many, many cyclists are using 9- and 10-speed chains with older cranksets and having no problems whatever. New Chainrings, Old ChainsGoing the other direction, using wider chains with chainrings intended for narrower chains is not generally a major problem if there's only a one- or two- generation difference. The only problem you might run into is that the chain will be more liable to rub on the inside of the bigger chainrings in the small/small crossover gears, gears you shouldn't be using in any case. It is possible to fudge compatibility in some cases where cog-to-cog spacing is similar. Campagnolo/Shimano 8-speed cassettes have different spacing , so you can't generally get good indexing using a Campagnolo 8-speed wheel with a Shimano shift system or vice versa. Campagnolo 8-speed cassettes used a slightly different spline pattern from the current pattern used for 9-and 10-speed systems. Hyperglide cassettes are commonly sold as a unit There are dozens of different cassette combinations available. Most cassettes are designated by a one- or two-letter code. Very early Freehubs (sometimes identifiable by the absence of the typical bulge on the right end of the hub barrel) which have non-interchangeable bodies. The Freehub body of these hubs is held on only by the axle bearings, and will slip off once the axle is removed.

Not all 8-speed cassettes are compatible. Campagnolo and Shimano 8-speed cassettes have different spacing, so it is generally not possible to achieve proper indexing when combining a Campagnolo 8-speed wheel with a Shimano shift system, or vice versa. 3. Is a cassette better than a freewheel tool?

If you do re-space your hub, you'll also need to re-dish your wheel, because the extra space will all be added on the right side by installing the wider Freehub body. You'll need to tighten spokes on the right, possibly also loosen some on the left, to move the rim 2mm to the right so that it will once again be centered in the frame. Dura-Ace 7800 and 7801 10-speed hubs (and Ultegra wheelsets) with the aluminum Freehub body and tall splines accept only Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 10-speed cassettes. When discussing cassettes, the terms "Road" and "Mountain" are marketing terms, not technical ones.
