Vatersay is an idyllic little isle– the most southernly in the Outer Hebrides – and is conveniently connected to Barra via a short causeway. As the first storm of the season Arwen got a name beginning with 'A', and as the second, Barra, gets 'B'. The third storm of the season if there is one will be called Corrie. In common with many of the new Anglo-Scottish landlords, Colonel Gordon evicted most of the islanders to make way for sheep farming. Some of the displaced islanders variously went to the Scottish mainland. Others joined the Scottish diaspora in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada. When you’re out walking, be prepared for vehicles to slow down beside you, and offer you a lift to wherever they are going.
