About this deal

Once part of a large estate, Prior’s Wood is now a beautiful nature reserve where you and your pooch can enjoy an enchanting woodland dog walk in Somerset. In late spring, the woods are a popular attraction for the beautiful bluebells displays across the forest floor. Just remember your pup must remain on their lead in the reserve to avoid disturbing the local wildlife. With plenty of loam for scurrying, nooks for sniffing and birds for chasing, sometimes you just can’t beat a woodland walk with your four-legged pal. And it turns out that this walk has a built-in history lesson. So, before we get into the walk itself, let’s take a trip down memory lane (and don’t worry, we’ll keep it brief). If you take the stroll up Old Pale Hill in Delamere Forest, you’ll find an information plaque. It’s not just any old plaque though - it’s beautifully written and journeys you through time millennia ago (think glaciers, the Iron Age, Romans and King Alfred the Great) - the perfect read with Snowdonia, the Pennines and Clwydian Range in the distance! Now, onto the walk… The Castles & Coasts way is a long circular route through this quiet area of Somerset and links the Coleridge Way with the England Coast Path. It can be completed in one day, or you could walk a section in a shorter circuit. Either way, you and your pup will love this walk through the pastoral haven of the Somerset countryside. The walk up the hill is well rewarded with views over the rolling countryside, across the Wiltshire Downs, Bath and Bristol. On a clear day, you can even see the Severn bridges and across to Wales, making you and your pup feel like you’re on top of the world. Or for a shorter walk, which is great for our more senior or slower companions, or for young families, follow our Whitefield Moorroute, which is just 1.6 miles long (there is a shorter loop you can follow too if you wish). On this route you can enjoy the gorgeous Ober Water, where a stream runs through the forest, take in the beautiful scenery and you are likely to spot some wildlife on this walk too.

The speed of a dog's wagging tail might also give you an indication of their mood, Psychology Today reports. Not all of our favourite dog walks in East Yorkshire are in the Wolds though, here’s a few more great hikes that this pair of intrepid spaniels love. A circular wagging tail is a sign of happiness, but “happy tail syndrome” is a much more upsetting issue. Well known for its dramatic scenery and unspoilt coastline, Devon is one of the most beautiful spots in the UK. But it’s not just human adventurers who can benefit from it’s stunning views and fresh air… dogs love it too!Of course, the tail is only one component of your dog’s body language. Relying on just the tail to judge a dog’s feelings is a frequent cause of misunderstandings, as tail body language depends on the context and overall body language. Not all breeds can show their happiness in this way though. Dogs with very short or curly corkscrew tails might not be able to wag in a circular fashion due to their limited range of motion. It’s also important to note that not all dogs use helicopter tail to express their joy.

However, the world of dogs is full of exceptions. So, while a helicopter tail is generally a sign of joy, it’s still crucial to consider the dog’s overall body language. For example, some dogs may wag in a circle if they’re over-stimulated or highly aroused. Whether you fancy a short stroll through the woods or are up for a longer walk that takes in Millington Dale as well you and your pooch will have the time of your life here. You can park at the Millington Woods car park, but bear in mind that there are no facilities here, the nearest ones are at the dog friendly pub in the village, The Gait Inn, although this tends to be open only at weekends in the daytime except for in high season. This syndrome is often first noticed when the owner starts seeing blood spatters on furniture or around the room. Dogs with happy tail syndrome may also develop bald spots on their tail. Over time, painful, deep wounds can form on the tail too.
