About this deal

Firstly, your child needs to be old enough and capable to chew and tablet and use it as a paste rather than chewing and swallowing, like they might a sweet. They need to understand how it works. Children aged 6 years or above will likely understand this, but it will be parental discretion. But when it comes to protecting against cavities, there is no evidence base for supporting one type of fluoride over another. The guidelines we use as dentists advise that we can recommend stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate. (See The Delivering Better Oral Health Toolkit for example). Microcellulose fibers (microcrystalline cellulose) polishes your teeth and in between, helping to prevent plaque and buildup of particles on the tooth and around the tooth.

The Cochrane Library systematic review Fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations for preventing dental caries Whilst I don’t recommend fluoride free toothpaste, as you miss out on the known anti-cavity properties of fluoride, I respect that some people may still wish to avoid toothpastes containing fluoride. Yes, SLS may also be called sodium dodecyl sulfate; dodecyl sulfate, sodium salt; and sodium n-dodecyl sulfate. Is SLS a natural ingredient?

In the table below, I have included some brief notes and a comparison of other SLS-free toothpastes. Fluoride free toothpastes are available, but cannot claim to be “anti-caries” and will not receive the Oral Health Foundation Approval. If you have sore gums you may consider an SLS free toothpaste to prevent further irritation, especially if you already have ulcers. Some toothpastes may also include further ingredients to help reduce the amount of gum disease causing bacteria, as explained in more detail in my article on the best toothpaste for gum disease. There is a nice fresh minty taste, without the dusty, chalky and clumpy texture that can come with some other products.

A great option, for those that want to avoid fluoride, they taste good, clean well and leave a lasting freshness. If they’re out of reach, then you can try to buy toothpaste that comes in a pump, rather than a tube, if this is accessible to you. Recycle Now says that pump-action toothpaste tubesare easier to recycle. If you’re shopping for a more specialised toothpaste, you may find some of our other toothpaste posts useful. It is Bite who have perhaps drawn the most attention to this new type of toothpaste product thanks to gaining the attention of leading publications around the world.

You only need to carry what you intend to use. Say you’re away for a week, you know you only need fourteen tablets, assuming you brush twice daily, so you're not bringing excess weight. This is Denttabs' explanation (in their own words, which has been translated from German, by them may I add) as to why they used these ingredients, so refreshing to see a company explaining the purpose of what they put in their product! - Once you’ve chosen a product, make sure you use it regularly and properly. See our guide here on how to brush your teeth. So, how do you actually use toothpaste tablets? Toothy Tabs, from British cosmetics brand Lush, directs users to “nibble one tab to form a toothpaste and then use a wet toothbrush to clean as normal.” Most tablets feature similar crush-brush-and-rinse instructions. Denttabs Mint toothpaste tabs for adults go beyond brushing: They polish your teeth until they're smooth, thanks to the high content of cellulose. Developed by dentists. Natural, sustainable, foam-free.

Doing away with what many would consider the ‘unnecessary’ ingredients, their range of toothy tabs are one of, if not the largest with an array of flavours, some of which will appeal to more than others.
