Terry Hearn Features 16-10-2020 08:23:00 Terry Hearn: Casters in detail Whilst I covered my caster rig in last year’s Little Grey film, I thought I’d try my best to go over it in a little more detail, taking a closer look at the caster clusters… Now it is time to give those caster maggots a “drink” of water. I add half a pint of water into the container which now contains the maggots and the sawdust, pouring it all down one hole in the centre of the container. When fishing weedy waters, I pay a lot of attention to detail when finding the right spot to fish a bag of casters. Careful plumbing with braid to find the clear spots is what I am looking for. I am not a massive fan of fishing PVA bags in weed and will always opt for the clearest, hardest spots I can find, which I see as dinner plates on which the carp like to come and feed. On the busier waters it is often the case that the clear spots are only clear because they are fed on regularly, so a PVA bag of casters on a dinner plate is a recipe for success.

When rivers are low and clear and the chub and barbel play hard to get there’s one fishing bait that I keep up my sleeve. The classic combination of hemp and casters can send even the most wary river fish loopy, and with practice you can work them up into a feeding frenzy. The key to this style of fishing is to be confident in what you are doing… KEEP THE COST DOWNBristled pole floats come into their own when you are only fishing a few inches overdepth, let’s say anywhere from a couple of inches to six inches overdepth. I like a bristled float in this situation because I find the bites more “readable”. Don’t get me wrong, just because it has a bristle does not mean you do not still need sensitivity and the float needs to be shotted down so that no more than 2mm to 4mm of the bristle is proud of the surface, but you do get better “readability” with a bristled float. I have a selection of hook patterns that I use depending on the situation. On a hard canal when I expect bites to be at a premium, I usually start on a Kamasan B512 which is a fine wire, red-coloured wide gape hook. It is light but strong and teamed with a three to four elastic is balanced, using hooklength diameters up to .10mm. And trust me, your wife will thank me for this tip as it prevents escapees, which means no bluebottles at a later date swarming into the house and causing unnecessary earache! Now for the bait itself. You need to start with fresh maggots, fresher the better. Don't worry about shops telling you that old maggots turn better. They may turn faster but the casters will be rubbery and shrunken. If you need casters for a weekend, I'd buy the maggots on the first week on the Wednesday of the week before, allowing ten days.

The reason I use tail rubbers is that I find the shop-bought connector beads a bit fiddly, too bulky or too big, which can cause tangles where the rig line wraps around the fine elastic behind the bead. Feeding when Caster Fishing With big, powerful fish, Steve keeps the rod tip down low all the way until the fish is within netting range. The fish tend to be calmer if you keep them low in the water. They normally go berserk when you get them high up in the water and they can see things. If your hooklink is on the verge of breaking, or the hook pulling, this is when it will happen. Casters aren’t just a brilliant winter bait, they work all year round. I have caught on PVA bags of casters in the edge during the summer months, when fishing has been difficult and they seem to ignore most other traditional baits that they are used to seeing. It is more than likely that casters are something that most carp haven’t come across before, but once they have a feed on them it’s clear that they absolutely love ‘em! Maggots are a fantastic winter bait, but I think that casters are actually better as they have the added crunch factor. Carp love the crunch factor, which is part of the reason nuts such as tigers are so successful. As they crunch the casters all of the juices are released and as they feed, all the juice starts pouring out of their gills releasing their natural attractors into the water and making the carp go wild for them. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a carp rod made with distance casting and fishing in mind, the Basia X45X’s performance on larger waters and venues is almost unparalleled.

The icing on the cake with the Torrix is that the rod is fully customisable so you can create a build that suits perfectly to your needs and tastes. Progressive action rods are more often found in shorter beach casters under 13ft. They are more commonly used for fishing closer in. Unless you are trying to cast a very long way, you can safely ignore rod actions with no real repercussions. If you go from a fast action rod to a slow action or vice versa you may find the rod feels odd. It’s personal preference. What are some problems that occur with beach casters I should be aware of?

And the beauty of the caster is that it catches whatever swims – big perch love it, so do roach, bream, carp, tench, gudgeon and hybrids.Reason number two for using styls is that they offer a slower fall of the rig and the hookbait through the water and their fine, delicate profile makes them less visually obtrusive to shy, wild fish. Quality casters will last up to ten days as long as you remember to open the bags once a day for ten minutes, to allow the chrysalis or caster to “breathe” as it is a living thing and it needs a little air to stay alive. I read about people draining off all the water and then adding pellet oil or other fish oils over the casters and putting them into an air-tight plastic bag and freezing them that way. The theory is that it stops the caster shells from breaking and it will also stop them from floating. How long will they keep in the fridge?

For distance fishing you will need either the 3.5 or 3.75lb version. These both provide plenty of power and leverage throughout the blank to maximise casting potential. The short answer is “no”, so look at your peg, use a plummet and build a mental map of the peg’s contours. Floats – Dibbers and Standard Pole Floats – And Why These three patterns will handle any lumps you hook, i.e. bream of 2lb plus, without being too heavy as to affect delicate presentation. These can be teamed with hooklength diameters of .085mm to .12mm and with elastics up to a number eight. Aslow, overhead cast will send the weight of the plummet flying straight out in front of the float and lay the rig out in a straight line, avoiding tangles.
