The quality of the product from their distillery had resulted in the other distilleries in the area renaming their products to "Glenlivet" and by the time of George's death, several distillers were doing so. J.G. Smith decided to take legal action and tried to claim ownership on The Glenlivet name, this legal action was only partially successful - the verdict forced other distillers in the area to stop calling their whisky Glenlivet and gave J.G. Smith and the blender Andrew Usher sole permission to use the brand, but permitted other distilleries to hyphenate their distillery name with the "Glenlivet" name, which resulted in new distillery names such as The Glen Moray-Glenlivet Distillery, a distillery which is situated nearby. This whisky was made for sipping.

The Glenfiddich 12 single malt scotch whisky is a characteristically sweet whisky. Its unique flavour profile boasts aromas of light fresh fruit, such as creamy pear notes and apple notes, as well as creamy butterscotch notes. These notes are crisp on the palate with a hint of spice that lingers. Upon further tasting, there are subtle hints of honey and malt that add to the complexity of this special whisky.a b c d e Morrice, Philip (1983). The Schweppes Guide To Scotch. Today, the distillery is owned by the Chivas Brothers subsidiary of the French alcoholic beverages company Pernod Ricard, which also oversees the distillery's production of 5,900,000 proof litres per annum. [3] [4] The majority of this – enough for 6 million bottles – is sold as The Glenlivet single malt, with the remainder being used in Pernod Ricard's blended whisky brands. [2] Production [ edit ] The Glenlivet distillery logo Illicit distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside area from 1700s but were largely made redundant with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. [12] It was under this legislation that legal distilleries could be formed, subject to holding a license. Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, was allegedly instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Although there is no historical record of his involvement in the issue, his tenant, George Smith, who was operating an illicit distillery on his Upper Drummin farm at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. [8] [13] [14] [15] This new take saw its primary maturation in American and Sherry oak casks, before a round of finishing in first-fill Oloroso sherry, Troncais oak Cognac and Vintage Colheita port casks (this latter is a personal favorite when it comes to Port). This is bottled at 43% ABV.The Glenlivet is the best selling malt whisky in the United States, and the fourth best selling in the UK with a 7% market share. The Glenlivet is the world's second best selling single malt whisky, and current global sales total 6 million bottles per annum. [2] The Malt Whisky Trail Map A pour of the 21 Year Old takes on a copper cast in the glass. The nose had a cake-like, fruity character, with a current of musty air washing over it. The flavor develops those qualities substantially, coming out as baked pears smothered in honey, touched up with vanilla, ginger and golden raisins. This fades fast on the finish, winding down first to hay before finally settling on a faint trace of oak. It’s a smooth, balanced, cultured dram, and well worth it at the price point offered (see below). During the early 1920s, when America was in a period of prohibition, Glenfiddich Distillery stood out from all others by increasing production and rising to meet the sudden surge for aged whiskies that followed repeal. The distillery has 7 wash stills each with a capacity of 15,000 litres and 7 spirit stills with a capacity of 10,000 litres. [6] The spirit is then matured in oak casks. [5] B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars.
