About this deal

I’m using Hexwraiths to showcase the process as I didn’t take pictures when I was working on the actual models in Soul Wars. The added bonus of a glaze is that it also helps with blending. In the example above with the red, the red glaze I applied helped blend those layers and highlights together as well. Another reason glazing is great. Examples of Glazing Miniatures

The glazes most miniature painters will find are from Citadel. They offer a range of glazes that cover the primary colors. If you have ever considered painting white on your model ever, get yourself some Apothecary White. It will make your life so easy. Rhinox Hide: As a rich brown paint, Rhinox Hide can be used to create depth and shadows when paired with Hexwraith Flame. This is an analogous color pairing, where the two colors are adjacent on the color wheel. Rhinox Hide can be used to darken the Hexwraith Flame, create shading, and balance out the bright, ghostly green. A good example is when I’ve painted red. There have been times where once I was done with the red I found it a bit too dull. To remedy that, I applied a red glaze over it and give it more saturation, to brighten it up.Wait for the model to completely dry. I’m repeating that on purpose because it’s super important. Once the model is dry apply the shade all over. Kinda like the previous step. After that, wait for the model to completely dry… Lady Olynder is the most powerful Nighthaunt special character, and one of Nagash’s most powerful generals. In life, Olynder was a schemer and liar. Manipulating her way to the royal court of her kingdom, she murdered her husband-to-be and claimed his empty throne. She wore a veil of feigned grief for the rest of her mortal life.

To bring it all together, I did some glazing highlights. Starting with the center of the sword and the runes on the pillar (both the areas I would figure the light would come from), I used Moot Green, then get a little smaller with the highlight and use Flashgitz Yellow, and then finally White Scar at the very center. For a glazing highlight, you basically want to make the paint ULTRA thin on your palette, and then apply very thin layers on top of each other while getting smaller with each layer, so the color will be the most bold in the middle. Doing this with three colors produces a very easy glow effect that’s great for power weapons and the glow lighting. After hitting the edges of the sword with Stormhost Silver and using the Tesseract Glow/Hexwraith Flame combo to give the base a poor man’s OSL effect once the base was finished, we come up with a visually striking glow effect that is honestly really easy to do. Now with the dust settled and continuing to glance over my shoulder at my Drazhar while I type this with a smile, I can say painting him is one of my prouder hobby achievements. I tried some new things with him and he came out incredibly in the end, a fitting centerpiece to my Realspace Raiding force! A few tips to take away from this: All three infantry units in this box are battleline choices, making this a very strong foundation for any army. To expand this into an army, you could consider Craventhrone Guard, crossbow toting ghouls who can target enemies they can’t even see with their ethereal bolts, and who will benefit from the Knight of Shrouds’ Spectral Overseer ability. Paint the Hexfires– Many of the models have extra “flame” bits. Clean those up with some white paint and then re-shade them with the new Hexwraith Flame. Dip your brush into the glaze to load it into the bristles. You don’t want too much because you don’t want pooling. With no solid physical form, Nighthaunt can retreat from combat and then charge in the same turn. They can all also fly, allowing them to move over terrain and models without hindrance. Their movement shenanigans can even begin before the first movement phase thanks to the Vanishing Phantasms rule. This allows you to remove three units from the battlefield at the end of deployment and put them into an ambush reserve, ready to enter play anywhere more than nine inches from all enemy units. They’re all also fast, most of them having a movement speed of eight inches or more. One of the issues I’ve noticed with this technique is that once you’re at the “done” step, your army in aggregate looks kinda like a big greenish blob. Nothing really stands out even though individually they look pretty cool. That’s why I’m not stopping here. If you really want take your army to the next level there are a few things you do. Another example is some terrain I worked on for Warhammer Underworlds. I primed all the terrain white and then painted it using washes and glazes. The washes gave shading and depth, and the glazes gave it color. The spooky ghostly nature of the paint would be advantageous to Necrons as an immortal species and would also suit with the unearthly appearance of the Chaos Daemons. In the end, the decision comes down to personal preference and army vision. Hexwraith Flame Colour Schemes & Combinations As mentioned above, a glaze will alter a color. So, why not just paint it the way you want it to begin with?
