About this deal

During the 1990s [ citation needed] botanists began experimenting with hybrids of Poa pratensis and Texas bluegrass ( P. arachnifera), with the goal of creating a drought and heat-resistant lawn grass. In warm climates, such hybrids may remain green year-round. [7] Grant, Bonnie L. (15 February 2023). "What Is Bella Grass: Information On No Mow Bella Turf Grass". Gardening Know-How . Retrieved 2023-02-21. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to establish a bluegrass lawn. Greenview’s high-quality bluegrass seeds at an affordable price point. The product is uncoated and comes in a 3-pound bag, suitable for seeding a new lawn up to 1,500 square feet or overseeding an existing lawn of up to 3,000 square feet.

Like many super hardy turfs, it is quite slow to germinate and grow (about 25 days). Poa pratensis is a perennial grass that can be recognised by looking very closely at the end of its leaves.Additionally, if there are patches of bare ground where no grass has grown previously, add some compost into those spots as well as around existing plants and shrubs for additional nutrition and improved water retention capacity in those areas too. Poa pratensis is a herbaceous perennial plant 30–70 centimetres (12–28in) tall. The leaves have boat-shaped tips, narrowly linear, up to 20 centimetres (8in) long and 3–5 millimetres (0.12–0.20in) broad, smooth or slightly roughened, with a rounded to truncate ligule 1–2 millimetres (0.039–0.079in) long. The conical panicle is 5–20 centimetres (2–8in) long, with 3 to 5 branches in the basal whorls; the oval spikelets are 3–6 millimetres (0.12–0.24in) long with 2 to 5 florets, and are purplish-green or grey. They are in flower from May to July, compared to annual meadowgrass ( Poa annua) which is in flower for eight months of the year. Poa pratensis has a fairly prominent mid-vein (center of the blade).

It is an excellent grass for the frost prone areas of Australia, including Victoria and Tasmania as it maintains its color and does not go dormant during winter. Set your first few mowings at a lower setting with a sharpened blade. This allows sun, water, and nutrients to continue penetrating the base of your grass and stops the tips from turning dull and brown. For completely optimal conditions, like those in the northeast or northwest regions of the United States, you will likely be able to get by without investing in an irrigation system, though having one will make maintenance more convenient. Wait until your grass has grown to about 4 inches before mowing and make sure to mow no more than a third of the height at any given time. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a zone map that divides the country into different zones based on average annual minimum temperatures. This map, known as the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, is used by gardeners and landscapers to determine the suitable plant species for their specific area based on the average minimum winter temperature. The zones are classified into different categories, ranging from Zone 1 (coldest) to Zone 13 (warmest).

Seeding Rate & Planting Time

Butler, Sara (June 17, 2022). "All about the turf grass at your favorite MLB ballpark". lawnlove.com. Lawn Love. Archived from the original on March 11, 2023 . Retrieved March 10, 2023. Growth Habit: With a spreading growth habit through above-ground rhizomes, it forms a dense and carpet-like turf. This rhizomatous growth makes it popular for turf growers, aiding in soil cohesion and producing robust turf rolls. Make sure not to overwater either; too much water can lead to disease or pest problems such as fungal diseases or grubs feeding on roots near the surface level where they are more easily accessible by these pests. Many people love bluegrass because of its hardiness. It is well adapted to areas of high foot traffic, making it ideal for yards or parks with children and dogs. It has the ability to recover after being stepped on. Water your lawn adequately to keep the soil moist for the first week, then steadily decrease the amount of water as the grass germinates and begins to grow. This will encourage your new seedlings to grow healthy roots that try to seek out water and make your lawn more resilient (but as discussed, don’t under-water your bluegrass).
