About this deal

Although not exclusively about mermaids, The Secret of Platform 13certainly features a lot of them. When I was nine years old, one of my favourite things about this book was the mermaid in the Pimlico swimming pool with the dreadful singing voice (from all the chlorine). The Nereids were friendly for the most part and were known to help sailors in times of need. One of the most famous examples of Nereids helping humans was when they decided to help the Argonauts in their search for the Golden Fleece. Hydrokinesis: Hydrokinesis is the elemental ability to create, control and manipulate liquid water at will. Hydrokinesis has been used to float water in the air or spray it in the form of a jet blast. One can also control water and mold it into any shape and for his or her desires. It's also used to mold water into a multitude of shapes, ranging from simple water orbs to a miniature mermaid figurine and three-headed snakes. Hydrokinesis also allows the user to multiply the water molecules, making the shape of the water to grow more and expand in size, despite the small amount in a glass to begin with. What better gift idea than one of these enchanting stories about magic under the sea? These captivating tales will make any child want to dive right into reading them cover-to-cover (or at least until their eyes get tired). Technically this book doesn't feature mermaids at all, but it does star a zombie goldfish, which is a mutant fish... and what is also essentially a mutant fish? Correct! A mermaid. (It's not cheating.) 5. Peter Pan by J.M Barrie (featuring traditional mermaids playing dodgeball)

While I believe mermaids have different lifespans than humans, it is doubtful that they live forever. They are biological beings who are most likely subject to universal processes such as aging and dying. However, there are beliefs that mermaids are spiritual creatures who live on a different plane of existence. Those kinds of mermaids would be immortal. That is a common archetype in mermaid legends and myths. Merfolk live in every body of water and protect the ocean. This book is a wonderful guide to mermaids — it gives you information about the different types of mermaids like Sonni who is a merboy protector of Fjords and shares a story stories about a girl named Ruby who meets a mermaid named Ionie. Read our review of The Secret of Platform 13 3. The Storm Keeper's Island by Catherine Doyle (featuring merrows, also known as Irish mermaids)We have always created creatures and monsters in our minds,” says Marina Warner, a historian and mythographer. “Mermaids are an inviting and seductive example of that. It’s about seeing ourselves as not entirely human… there is a deep yearning in our mechanised, technologised world to become something organic, of the sea as well as of the land. It’s a pleasurable place to be, suspended between belief and disbelief.” Shelby, one of Fionn's new friends, explains that merrows are less like mermaids, more like monsters. Those on Arranmore have very little dealing with them, which Shelby decides is probably a good thing: 'I've only just got over my fear of dolphins and their creepy smiles.' Li Ban and her lap dog lived in an underwater chamber for one year after the great flood. After this time had passed, she was transformed into a mermaid – half maiden and half salmon. Her lap dog was transformed into an otter. Interestingly enough, Alexander the Great’s sister – Thessalonike – was thought to have lived on as a mermaid after her death. She was thought to have lived in the Aegean sea. She was known to have been perceived as somewhat of a threat to ships who were sailing in this area. When a ship passed by an area she was in, she was said to have swum up to the side of the vessel and ask, “Is King Alexander Alive?” Thessalonike The fourth “Harry Potter” film includes plenty that isn’t mermaid-related, from teenage students fighting literal dragons to the timelessly charming Yule Ball. Still, Harry’s second trial in the Triwizard Tournament — tasked to rescue his friend Ron from an underwater maze overridden with vicious merpeople — stands out among the best moments in this generally strong “Goblet of Fire” adaption from director Mike Newell and screenwriter Steve Kloves. Daniel Radcliffe sells the CGI-heavy sequence with remarkable believability, even as audiences are submerged in the characteristically ludicrous magic of a school murdering students for sport.

Now is the time to plant some “happy seeds” on your career path, and remember the sky is the limit! List of famous mermaid names in greek mythology. Please note, not all of these names are actual mermaid names. Most of them are just first names relating to greek gods and goddesses of the sea and ocean: Siren Singing: Siren singing is an ability that allows the mermaid to put a boy into an irresistible, hypnotic trance in which he will follow her around.

2. “The Shape of Water” (2017)

Though many mermaids in the UK region were seen as vengeful and malevolent, the merpeople who lived near the Isle of Man were thought to be much more friendly towards human beings. These mermaids were known as Ben-Varrey and were known to have been very generous towards humans. Mermaids were known to reward humans who helped them in times of need or were generous towards them. Merpeople in One Thousand and One Nights

In the west of Scotland, Kate Macleod is captured from above, moving through a northern sea of chill turquoise, her tail rippling out behind her. The aerial shot is from the introduction to Miann na Maighdinn-mara and the point where the magic of the landscape makes you believe that the swimmer below could – possibly – be magical, too. The correct answer to this question was, “Yes. He lives and both rules and conquers the world.” This answer would please Thessalonike and she would calm the waters of the ocean so that the ship could continue peacefully. If she received an answer that she didn’t like, however, she would cause the waters around her to be stirred into a terrible turmoil and doom the ship. When this happened, it was thought that no sailor would leave the vessel alive.
