This is Imaginate’s 30th year of children’s theatre festivals, and I have been to shows in nearly every one of them. But it is many years since I saw a show that so thoroughly took my imagination out, dusted it off, carefully sprinkled it with fairy dust – and then set it ablaze! Donald Trump won that second term, and he’s planning a third… Meanwhile, Abby, an ambitious New York actor, aces an audition only to discover she’s cast as ‘Melania Trump’ – but not on stage. Abby must keep her new role secret from everyone, including her husband Daniel, a celebrated documentary-maker working on a Trump exposé. Bundled on to Air Force One to accompany Donny on his second state visit to the UK, when she arrives at the hotel, she discovers she has more than perfecting Slovenian vowel sounds to keep her busy. As White House staffers control Abby’s every move, increasingly agitated protestors gather outside.

HighTide festival, ensconced in its round, cavernous brand new space at pop-up venue The Mix, reflects the democratic nature of theatre. Audiences and actors are equals, and all voices are heard, monitored and weighed up, no matter how much personal views may conflict with those of the characters on stage. It's an important sentiment, and an essential one for Nessah Muthy's Heroine, directed by HighTide artistic director Steven Atkinson.
