The body has notes of orchard fruits, both fresh and cooked with a little vanilla cream and the finish is medium-length with spice and honey. People should also realise that the price being secured by Irish whiskey today is not necessarily the same they will get when it comes time to sell their own. This is a good Irish whiskey for first timers as it’s smooth and has a very pleasant finish. I’ve finished more bottles of this than I’d care to remember! It's first and foremost a consumer product, but whiskey is increasingly becoming the subject of investor interest - with some rare bottles selling for tens and even hundreds of thousands of euro in the past year. More recently, West Cork was behind the Pogues whiskey, “the official Irish whiskey of the legendary band,” which we reviewed earlier this fall. They’re reportedly one of only two independent distilleries in Ireland, and malt their own (Irish-grown) barley.

Dried fruit, caramel taffy, honey candy, spice, pie crust, grain and a touch floral with some notes of vanilla and oak drifting through. Established in 1757, Kilbeggan claims to be Ireland’s oldest licensed distillery and, after battling through a painful closure in 1953, it was revived by locals 30 years later who’ve kept it going ever since. Expect a good body with notes of sherried peels, honey, grains and vanilla cream with a caramel and a toffee finish.

The whiskey has precious little in common with the 10 year old single malt we reviewed in 2015, which came across as a fruit bomb overloaded with apple notes. Those with more experienced palates will find it smooth and easy to nurse. It’s also nice and affordable and widely available online and in-store. It is great to release this seven-year-old single malt which was distilled at the Market Street Distillery and embodies the distillate signature of this unique distillery. This whiskey is triple distilled with the third distillation taking place in the small copper pot stills, stoically named CPS1/2. The slow distillation in such small stills ensures a large copper to distillate surface area ratio which conveys smoothness and really delicate character to the whiskey which we are particularly pleased with.” The best Irish whiskey for: Those with an experience palate looking for a very non-Irish-tasting Irish whiskey
