About this deal

Oricon Album Chart Book: Complete Edition 1970–2005 (in Japanese). Roppongi, Tokyo: Oricon Entertainment. 2006. ISBN 4-87131-077-9. Throughout, Iommi, Butler and Appice shine, their performances passionate and these new mixes help you appreciate just what a tight unit they’d become by then. The guitarist was always one of the leading inventors of the huge riffs but here you can really hear him play with a touch that few, if any, could match. Butler and Appice make an unstoppable rhythm section too, balancing killer punch with nuance. Nicholls too is an unsung hero, his playing adding real colour to the sound here that’s never intrusive but always welcome. The original 80’s US CD version had 2 discs in 2 Jewel Cases. The extra space allowed for the inclusion of War Pigs from the vinyl version, which is not on the original Vertigo print.

The crowd noise is still frustratingly low in the mix but the playing is what draws you in, these new sonic polishes putting you right there in the action. The remix sound is so much better than the remastered one. The voice and drums sounds amazing on this. A riposte to the unsanctioned ‘Live at Last’ album released three years previously and hot on the tails of Ozzy Osbourne’s double set ‘Speak of the Devil’ that consisted of twelve numbers from his former band, Sabbath wanted to bring out their own record of their onstage power.During the mixing of Live Evil, Dio and drummer Vinny Appice abruptly left the group, leaving original members Iommi and Geezer Butler to carry on. The two factions would provide vastly different accounts of what transpired as things fell apart. War Pigs" contains a drum solo from Vinny Appice, and "Heaven and Hell" contains a guitar solo from Tony Iommi. Geezer Butler has referred to this album a few times in interviews as “Live in the Studio Evil”, a reference to a lot of the overdubs on it.

Voodoo features some additional lyrics added by Dio, not previously heard on the Mob Rules studio recording. Overall, a great set with a great sound (remix) - don’t forget it is a live album (never listened to the OG version, so cannot compare). The UK cassette release had, as its first side, sides 1 and 3 of the vinyl release, with side two of the cassette being vinyl sides 2 and 4. [ citation needed] It seems this was not a mistake, rather a money-saving exercise, since the running-times of the two sides of the tape were more-or-less equal in this configuration. Both Ronnie & Vinny are not listed as full members of the band. The band had already split up by this time this was released. You can also follow the Album of the Day - a classic album presented in its entirety. Always great listening!
