Lilian Board — Digital Spy

David Hemery won the first ever British Superstars competition, held in 1973, registering a second victory in 1976, and was recognised as Britain's best Superstar from 1973 to 1977. IOPC Acting Director General Tom Whiting said: “We must never forget that at the heart of this case is a man who lost his life and our thoughts remain with Jermaine’s family and everyone affected. Board's performances at 400 m in the 1966 season earned her a place in the England team for the Commonwealth Games held in Kingston, Jamaica, that August. Here, after winning her 400 m heat (54.7), Board finished fifth in the final in a time of 54.7 seconds, just outside her personal best. It was a very creditable effort for a 17-year-old. Disappointingly, she was not then chosen for the Great Britain team at the European Championships in Budapest, which were held from 30 August – 4 September. However, such disappointment was short-lived as later in September, she made her Great Britain debut, achieving fourth in the 400 m (55.9) in a match against France in Lille. [10] 1967 season [ edit ]Within a few months, despite limited marketing, Sport First was selling nearly 100,000 copies and in the editor’s words ‘upsetting all the right people’. Fleet Street was soon taking notice, launching a succession of Sunday supplements in response. It is not an exaggeration to say David’s vision changed the way we consumed sports journalism. The following year, 1962, she began competing in the long jump and after training through that winter, improved markedly as both a sprinter and long jumper. [4]

And the other great quality he brought to the office every day was a sense of fun. I had17 years at the Express, then 17 years at the Mail. It was 40 times more fun on the Express and we worked all hours as well.” Speaking at the time, Miss Boardman said: "He was the type of person who everyone on the street would go to for help. If any of the kids on the estate had a puncture on their bike they'd go to Cheeky - they all absolutely loved him. After leaving the Express, to cap it all he demonstrated entrepreneurial skills in starting up his stable of weekly, specialised sports papers. When Jim (above) was preparing his latest mini-masterpieces it was not to the sports desk, nor the colleagues next to him in the Press box, he would turn to with his perennial question: “Do you think this works?” It was the mother of his three daughters at home, first in Surrey and more latterly in a little village near Chester. Hemery's first International title came at the 1966 Commonwealth Games, where he won the 120 yd hurdles in 14.1 seconds, a title he retained four years later at the 1970 Commonwealth Games (by then it was the 110m hurdles which he won in 13.8 seconds). Video on YouTube at 3:35.Play hard, work hard was the motto that was never said, simply understood from his example. He was a newspaperman. You knew he had done it all, digging, getting in, writing superbly under pressure. He loved a challenge and expected those working with him to be as impromptu, as inventive, to care about the words. And so it came to pass that, while escorting a somewhat sceptical girlfriend home from a night out, Emery took a detour via the local athletics club. In his rush to make the right impression, it escaped his notice that the long jump pit was under repair.

Remembering David Emery, the journalists’ sports editor

About 25 years when I finally stopped after about 400 grands prix, we marvelled at my naivety as we went round Berkshire golf course at a Press Golf Society outing where David, a past captain, would produce the hip flask, and two of his sons and myself would laugh our way way along the fairways. Bad times. Nonetheless David, below, who I knew by name and towering reputation but only very slightly on a personal basis, was on the phone in late July inquiring about my health and prospects. Not good, I replied.Jim captured it all so eloquently, of course, insisting in showing me his intros which I then had to instantly ignore for fear of plagiarism. At other times he would sit guru-like on the floor of the hotel while Canadian journalists from the Vancouver Star surrounded his burgeoning Buddha figure and lapped up the charismatic wit and wisdom. Former Express sports editor David Emery on making Jim Lawton

This judgment does not mean that officers will be held to an impossible standard, that they can’t make mistakes or that hindsight will be unfairly used against them. The Supreme Court judgment simply means that officers can’t rely on unreasonable mistakes when justifying their use of force. Then Ben Johnson happened. Jim write his account of the failed drugs test and filed. Perhaps he was mindful of my earlier remarks and did not wish to over-react. Whatever, it wasn’t the piece I knew Jim had in his heart.

Trained by her father George and inspired by an illustrious club-mate, international long jumper and pentathlete Mary Rand, she concentrated on the sprints from the 1964 season with an emphasis on strength work and with a view to eventually moving up from the short sprints to the 440 and 880 yards, where George felt sure her future lay. She made her debut over both 220 yds and 880 yds in 1964, winning both events in times of 26.2 and 2:30.8, respectively. [6] I can remember Lilian Board, a lovely girl (a twin I believe). She was engaged to a journalist David Emery (may have that wrong) and I can remember the battle to save her life culminating in a stay in a clinic abroad and some revolutionary treatment that was all for naught. Awful to see the last photos of her in the papers. SJA British Sports Awards 2023: Voting opens for Sportsman, Sportswoman and Sports Team of the Year Rob Bagchi (27 April 2012). "50 stunning Olympic moments No25: David Hemery storms to gold in Mexico". The Guardian. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a medical emergency. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.
