All too often I’m shown pictures of people with completely different colouring and features so I’ve learnt to ask my brides, alongside these inspiration images, to show me a picture of themselves that they really like so together we can identify what exactly made them feel most beautiful and incorporate that into their wedding day look. 2. Prioritise your skin Most brides have a few months at least to plan their weddings (current circumstances have thrown this into question for some, I know) but self-care, especially skincare is particularly important. Some brides focus so much on the makeup that they neglect the canvas. It’s a great opportunity to help get your skin into condition so your makeup sits flawlessly on the big day. The greatest thing anyone can do for their skin is drink a lot of water. That’s right-you don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds on fancy treatments; drinking straight water does wonders for your skin. Then getting into good habits like exfoliating regularly and feeding your skin with serums (I love Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair) under your moisturiser will also help. Don’t do anything new in the days prior to the wedding My son was five before my daughter came along and from the age of two he was playing with whatever make-up he found lying around, and instead of chastising him for that, I actively encouraged it. I didn’t want him to grow up with any gender stereotypical, ‘I’m a boy, therefore I mustn’t like make-up’. If he wanted to grow up wearing make-up, I’d be ok with that. Other things that can be handy are mints (again, champagne and nerves can play havoc with your breath!), a hanky (tissues can disintegrate on the face and even worse, get in your eyes and cause them to stream but a little dab of a handkerchief prevents that), an atomiser with your favourite fragrance - it’s always nice to have a little fragrance spruce! 6. Throughout my career at Bobbi Brown I met loads of people who said, ‘I first started using Bobbi Brown when my mum brought me to the make-up counter at 15’. That can be great at diffusing a situation – rather than saying, ‘Your eyeliner’s too heavy! Your foundation’s too dark!’ Take them to the place they love the most, the beauty hall, and get the make-up artist to speak to them. Most make-up artists are clued in that if a parent brings a child in, it’s probably because they want some advice. I think sometimes young people would take it better coming from a make-up artist, rather than a parent. Take yourself out of the equation.
