About this deal

Delightful and heart warming tale of a distant descendent of Sir Walter Raleigh, meeting his ghost! And as a result an even more amazing story emerges from this meeting. Another great book by this fantastic children's author! 7 out of 12, Three Star read. Another great book by Michael Morpurgo, I’ve always loved his books as they are not only fun but also informative and you learn from them as well as enjoying the story. acts in one book. That surely is some talent. Emotional, funny, adventurous I can probably use all those words to describe this book. I liked Will the best. He is really good. The family are staying with their auntie, Auntie Marie she's called, When they are taking the dog out for a walk, he nosedives into a bush, and discovers...the lost crown jewels! Look out for Michael's other ghostly stories The Ghost of Grania O'Malley and The White Horse of Zennor.

Former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo needs no introduction. He is one of the most successful children's authors in the country, loved by children, teachers and parents alike. Michael has written more than forty books for children including the global hit War Horse, which was made into a Hollywood film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. For more information about the work of Farms for City Children, please visit www.farmsforcitychildren.org Then Bess meets a man, who introduces himself as Walter Raleigh! She;s an ancestor of him, a descendent, and Bess then decides to bring him home with her. This was planned for a Year 4 class with a high percentage of SEND children in a mainstream setting working significantly below the expected standard for Year 4. However, the lesson has enough of a challenge to engage the higher attaining pupils and could easily be adapted for an older or younger year group.

Walter helps Elizabeth's family hugely and he is kind and compassionate. Even though he can do a few mistake, he is an amazing friend to have. The family are given a large sum of money as a reward for finding them, and with that money, they buy another farm. Walter was right you see. Everything did turn out all right! A delightfully exciting and witty adventure that interweaves elements of history - Sir Walter Raleigh comes into the present as a ghost and wreaks havoc and fun with a family! - into a fun and gripping story which children will love. Higher Attainers - a picture of the Crown Jewels for reference (expectation to write directly into books and compare two objects)A hilarious tale of history come to life, from former children’s laureate and master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments My Friend Walter by Michael Morpurgo is an amazing KS2 story to cover whilst covering a Tudor England topic. Remember Sir Walter Raleigh, who laid his cloak in a puddle so Queen Elizabeth I could walk across? Well, Bess meets his ghost and finds out she’s his ancestor!

You can also read about his life in War Child to War Horse,a collaborative biography with Maggie Fergusson.Lower Attainers - worksheet with two columns: writing frame, two columns: Similarities and Difference, plus word bank with key vocabulary. The presentation and lesson can be a stand alone lesson, but was made to accompany the book ‘My Friend Walter’ by Michael Morpurgo. The main focus is writing a report about the Crown Jewels, so can easily be adapted without reference to the rest of the story. In a moment of national crisis, the Orb from the Crown Jewels has been stolen and the children are set the task of writing a report about the Crown Jewels. As newly appointed researchers and writers for Newsround, they need to compare the similarities and difference of the Crown Jewels, as if writing for a younger audience e.g. infants.

David Wood, chair of Action for Children’s Arts, said Morpurgo is “one of our greatest storytellers”. I enjoyed this book so much that I didn’t hear my mum tell me to turn my light off and go to bed. My favourite character is definitely Walter he is very friendly and is a mystery until further into the books. Why he stole the Crown Jewels still baffles me and also why he put them in a young girls room wowIt was quite funny, and I liked the aspect of Bess having a ghost friend. It wasn't my ideal book as it didn't have any cats in, apart from the one Humph chased. Take a look at the classroom display photos below, which are all based on work completed in History lessons. Could you use some of the ideas below as inspiration for your own displays?
