You’re not getting a top-end chipset inside this phone, with HMD Global employing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset. That allows for 5G connectivity, but you won’t see the same performance levels as in handsets that use the flagship Snapdragon 865 Plus. We've enjoyed the ultra-wide lens throughout this test, finding the much wider perspective useful in tight spaces and for landscape scenes. Overall, there are better smartphones out there at the same price point than the Nokia 8.3 5G for low light shooting. For example, intelligent image processing in the Google Pixel 4a renders better low light shots from what on paper is a simpler camera. Spec fanatics will likely sniff at the absence of an 8-series chip but, as we noted in our Pixel 5 review, the 765G is a perfectly competent piece of silicon that is more than powerful enough for most users. It’s also a lot less demanding on a phone’s battery.The Nokia 8.3 5G feels like a good phone that's arrived at the wrong time. It's impressive as many similar phones are, with good design, a nice display and plenty of power. But it's let down by a price that's high and a camera system that's not great. The Nokia 8.3 5G was unveiled at the beginning of 2020, but the phone was delayed, and didn’t come out until much later in the year. It's out now in the UK, so you're able to buy it right away. The company has clearly put a focus on video here, with a few extra features such as 4K 24fps and a 21:1 cinematic mode, while there’s also a new Action Cam mode that’s specifically designed to capture smooth video, which uses a higher frame rate of 60fps to improve footage of fast-moving subjects. In Pro photo mode, shutter speed can be manually selected up to a maximum of 20 seconds, while ISO goes up to 6400. If you can support the phone using a tripod, then this manual control over shutter speed might well be the best option for low light shooting.

For Mobile: lets you select a monthly Device Plan Credit Agreement (3-36 months) with a monthly Airtime Plan. Phone Plans over 12 months require a 24-month Monthly Airtime Plan. You can pay off your Device Plan early, and if you do, you can then keep your Airtime Plan on a 30-day contract or leave. If your Airtime Plan ends for any reason, you will need to keep on paying your monthly Device Plan (either in full or monthly) The phone itself is big, thanks to its large 6.81-inch display, which we’ll talk about in more detail shortly. We didn’t find it to be too large in the hand, but if you’re used to a phone with a smaller display you may struggle to use it comfortably. If you put this phone alongside a top-end device from the likes of Samsung or Apple you’d likely notice the difference, but we found this to be a nice-looking screen, with vibrant colors and good contrast. For video, in addition to the standard, ultra-wide and macro lenses, there are 'Action' and 'Dual Sight' settings. Action gives better stabilised footage at the cost of a notable image crop, while Dual Sight splits the screen in two to record with both front and rear cameras simultaneously - we love that feature. At the time of writing, Nokia is dangling another carrot, throwing in a pair of its Power Earbuds within the price of the phone.
Like most phones these days, that rear is smooth and somewhat slippery. However, somehow the 227g phone feels easy enough to operate single-handed, even the camera app. It's awkward, but possible. Sadly, there’s no option to enable different display modes but what’s on offer here is quite good for the price. The Nokia 8.3 5G’s display covered 98.7% of the sRGB colour gamut in our testing, with a total volume of 122%. Colour accuracy within sRGB is on point, too, with a measured Delta E of 1.75 (lower is better). You’ll be shooting 16MP shots with the main camera by default, and to make the most of the 64MP capabilities you need to switch to the Pro mode. That’s easy enough to find, but it’s not entirely clear that you’re only shooting in 16MP if you don’t select Pro mode. The design of the Nokia 8.3 5G is similar to what we’ve seen from HMD Global’s Nokia handsets in previous years, with a metal central band and Gorilla Glass on the rear of the phone. It comes with a ‘refracted light’ design that gives it a unique look rather than just a solid color.

The easy to navigate camera app offers some additional controls that vary depending on the active shooting mode. For example, the CRI LED flash for photos can also be used as a continuous light for video capture. There is a self timer in most photo modes. Bottom line? You won’t feel like you’re making any compromises in the power department here, unless you’re always cranking the most demanding games to their limits. The Nokia 8.3 5G is HMD Global’s first attempt at a cheap phone with 5G. It targets the same busy space as the Pixel 5 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro. The only downside to the phone’s heft is that, like the Moto G9 Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, it can feel a little unwieldy to use one handed, especially if you’re a southpaw. This is in part due to its sheer size, but also because of its physical button placement. The rear camera array on the Nokia 8.3 5G comprises a 64MP f/1.89 main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera with an aperture of f/2.2, a 2MP macro snapper and a 2MP depth sensor.Thankfully outside of this the screen is perfectly serviceable. Measuring in at 6.81-inches big it’s more than spacious enough for regular use, movie watching and gaming. The 1080 x 2400 resolution isn’t the sharpest you’ll find this price, but honestly you’ll struggle to spot individual pixels. However, we can't help but compare the Nokia 8.3 5G with the recently reviewed Google Pixel 4a and by comparison the camera functionality often comes up short. If, like us at Trusted Towers, you’re a fan of unadulterated, pristine clean Android installs then the Nokia 8.3 5G is a top phone. The 8.3 5G is one of a select few phones to come out this year as part of the Android One programme.

File sizes vary immensely depending on the shooting mode - its 30MB on average for a RAW image, anywhere between 5-15MB for the standard lens and 500KB for macro. You can turn off this feature in the settings, but you can’t reprogram it to do anything else, meaning you’re left with a completely superfluous button. It seems like an odd choice by HMD Global to introduce this on the Nokia 8.3 5G, and we can’t see many people finding it useful.It’s a stretch to call this a truly quad-camera setup, as the 2MP macro sensor proved to be mediocre throughout our usage and we also found the depth sensor didn’t make a huge difference to shots. The Nokia 8.3 5G is the first phone from HMD Global to support 5G, and the company is making a big deal of this fact, referring to this as the world’s first “global 5G smartphone”. Shooting modes include Night, Panorama, Slow Motion and Time-Lapse, plus in addition to the default photo mode there is Pro, Portrait, Video and a new Cinema mode.
