The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming

The One-Straw Revolution has been translated into over 20 languages and sold more than one million copies [3] and Fukuoka has been widely influential, inspiring an international movement of individuals discovering and applying his principles to varying degrees, [3] such as Akinori Kimura, [29] David Mas Masumoto [30] and Yoshikazu Kawaguchi, [31] and has significantly influenced alternative movements in the West, such as permaculture. [32] [33] This is a common argument in some areas of the organic world. We now know that there is no 'wild state' of bread wheat or rapeseed, they are plants created by humans by merging the genomes of other plants. As such, they do not have a wild state, yet here we are eating them. The plants we eat and did not create look nothing like their wild relatives - a wild banana is practically inedible as it's mostly seeds:Both the clay and the compost may need to be sifted to achieve the desired result. For those familiar with making earthen plasters, the sieves used for that are generally well suited to making seedballs. But is it a useful method? The book is nearly 30 years old yet nobody seems to have taken up his methods. I can't tell how it would fare in Australia, where the climate is much more extreme and unpredictable. Some of the things he advises are already common - Europe has been seeding clover for nitrogen replenishment for about 150 years, not sure whether Japan does that. My own research has focused on attempts to promote more sustainable farming systems in India. The farmers I have encountered who had experimented with Fukuoka-sensei’s methods mostly discontinued. They retained a strong belief in the theory and philosophy of natural farming, but their own experience of failure with ‘do-nothing’ techniques led them to believe that Fukuoka-sensei’s level of intuitive understanding of nature far surpassed their own and that it was not possible for them to be true natural farmers in practice. They remained inspired by his ideas but could not follow them all the way to the end. Perhaps, ultimately, this is the more ‘natural’ approach: nature rarely follows the same principles in all circumstances – it makes do with what it can manage, forges impromptu, contingent solutions, and combines awkwardly diverse elements to build systems and sub-systems most suited to the local level.
