About this deal

O’Grady and Portasio were married during a low-key wedding ceremony in 2017. – Additional reporting: PA Conor Capplis When Paul bought an isolated smallholding in the depths of the Kent countryside, complete with a barn, outbuildings and even its own wood, he confessed that not everyone was convinced he’d be suited to rural life.

Hidden away in the vast Kent countryside is a very rural village absolutely crawling with celebrities. Paul O’Grady lived with his husband Andre Portasio in Adlington, near Ashford in Kent, and his countryside home looks incredibly idyllic. However, farm life isn’t always idyllic. In his book Country Life, the star said there’s a “real learning curve to living in a rural community”. I remember my dad when I was a kid used to say we were related to Irish royalty, and we all used to laugh at him,” he recalled. “He’d say: ‘King Athel of Glinsk.’ And there’s actually Glinsk castle, and I wonder if there’s any truth in it. I’d quite fancy being Irish royalty!” Known for its vibrant community, the pretty village of Aldington has a lot to offer its residents - and a fair share of famous people have taken notice.I spent most of me childhood in Ireland,” Paul O’Grady said on RTÉ Radio 1′s Ryan Tubridy Show in 2015. “My family is down in Galway and Roscommon; they’ve got a farm there. I loved it as a kid.”

It’s all part of the fun, though, isn’t it? I wouldn’t want it to be plain sailing, to tell you the truth. Anyone near will get a pint thrust in their hand whether they like it or not. ‘Drink it! Drink that milk!’”He said: “Never buy a puppy off the internet as it’s more than likely they’ve come from unscrupulous puppy farms. The same goes for pet shops.

Just a couple of miles away in the village of Bilsington is Priory Home Farm which is a well known equestrian, livery and riding school. Paul is a supporter of many charities, Ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, and Save the Children, and a patron of, among others, Orangutan Appeal UK and Wildlife SOS.Paul moved to London from Birkenhead and while working as a social worker he began his comedy career on the pub and club circuit. He’s never showed pictures of the outside of the house, but often posted his pets, including pigs, llamas, goats, donkeys and his famous pooches. The 65-year-old is also an advocate for animal rights, and often speaks out against animal exploitation and cruelty. Despite being very rural and charming it has plenty of its own amenities, meaning that its 1,200 residents can happily isolate themselves within the village's boundaries.
