About this deal

One popular meme of a two-dimensional snowman created by laying a carrot nose and two twig arms on to two puddles is the sum total of the snowmen my children have witnessed during their five years on this warming planet. HRH is clearly interested in climate change and flooding but he can’t or won’t connect this with upland management. Us and them again sadly, but he could rise above it all and set an example. I wonder if he has read “Inglorious”?

Learn about other topics in the Ladybird Experts series including Gravity, Quantum Physics, Climate Change and Evolution. Desperate to warn people of the dangers of climate change, the Prince of Wales turned to Ladybird Books to spread the word. The result is a brand-new series of books explaining everything from evolution to quantum physics. Presenting the story of climate change – the science, the consequences and most importantly our options for responding to it – in a way that doesn’t ruffle the feathers of the notoriously sceptical right-leaning UK press is certainly a major step in the right direction. Talking to Penguin you also have the strong impression that the Expert series is a broadside against growing anti-expert rhetoric (‘People in this country have had enough of experts,’ said Michael Gove during the referendum campaign). The message of the series is that experts matter, and its team of writers signifies serious intent.

It’s a while since I bought a Ladybird book – but I still have a lot of the original series dotted around the house. One book won’t catapult climate change out of the green margins and into the middle-England mainstream. But with 6500 copies sold (and counting), this is a book on climate change that might just reach the elusive ‘unusual suspects’. His Royal Highness, Emily and I had to work very hard to make sure that each word did its job, while at the same time working with the pictures to deliver the points we needed to make. I hope we’ve managed to paint a vivid picture, and like those iconic titles from the 60s and 70s, created a title that will stand the test of time,” Juniper told the Mail on Sunday. Repeatedly, our research at Climate Outreach has pointed to the importance of authenticity in campaign messaging: although climate change really does pose catastrophic risks, screaming about climate catastrophe is not necessarily a good strategy if the people on the receiving end don’t see the same risks. Although in many ways undeserved, there are also lots of negative stereotypes around ‘typical’ climate activists, and the ‘doom and gloom’ that characterised many early climate campaigns. It’s clearly not the same as climate change,’ Jim Al-Khalili admits. ‘I am not on a moral crusade. But I would say quantum mechanics is on a par with evolution. We wouldn’t have health and medicine and agriculture without understanding Darwin’s theory of evolution. Similarly I wouldn’t be talking to you on my mobile phone without quantum mechanics.’

A Ladybird Book: Climate Change : The Prince of Wales, HRH

Charles penned a personal afterword for the publication, A Ladybird Book: Climate Change, written last summer when he was still the Prince of Wales. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ The constitutional monarch, who must remain politically neutral, wrote of how he admired children across the world for “raising the alarm and calling for big changed to happen.” As a social scientist whose work has focused on communicating climate change, the authors invited me to comment on an early draft, because they wanted to reach a broad audience. I gave the same advice to the prince’s co-authors as I would anyone else, based on the growing body of research on public engagement with climate change: whichever audience you’re hoping to engage with on climate change, it makes sense to try and connect with everyday experiences rather than abstract data and projections.
