About this deal

Eugenides dangling off the edge of Attolia’s palace in The King of Attolia, because his god isn’t ready for him to die yet. Still gives me shivers to think about. Sophos: Gen refers to him as “Useless the Younger.” Shy, sweet, and naive, Sophos seems to idolize Ambiades, though he is also fascinated by and shows kindness to Gen. He is smart and seems full of potential, but is poor at swordfighting and standing up for himself. Eddis: A small, rural country high in the mountains between Sounis and Attolia, also ruled by a queen. Though easily overlooked, unlike its neighbors, Eddis has never been conquered by outside forces. Sounis is hoping to change that…

The Thief’ Recap: Everything You Need to Know The Official ‘The Thief’ Recap: Everything You Need to Know

On the Road: Gen and the magus leave the next morning with three traveling companions: Ambiades, Sophos, and Pol. On the road for the next few days, Gen learns more about his troupe: Ambiades is good at riding and swordsmanship, but wants to put Gen in his place; Sophos is the son of the duke and book smart, but lousy at most other things; and the magus can be provoked into making serious threats. Also, Gen complains about wanting more food.

Go Time: The river stops flowing at midnight, revealing a door cut into the stone behind the waterfall. The magus warns Gen that the water will return at dawn and gives him a lamp with six hours of oil, along with his thieving tools. Gen has three nights to steal the Gift. The Queen’s Thief books awe and inspire me. They have the feel of a secret, discovered history of real but forgotten lands. The plot-craft is peerless, the revelations stunning, and the characters flawed, cunning, heartbreaking, exceptional. Megan Whalen Turner’s books have a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, with space waiting for more books to come.”—Laini Taylor, New York Times-bestselling author of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone novels and Strange the Dreamer

Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson What Are We Writing About When We Write About Ghosts? 2 hours ago Neither accepted nor beloved, Eugenides is the uneasy linchpin of a truce on the Lesser Peninsula, where he has risen to be high king of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis. As the treacherous Baron Erondites schemes anew and a prophecy appears to foretell the death of the king, the ruthless Mede empire prepares to strike. The biggest ones are from Costis’ perspective, as his view of the king becomes the readers’ (despite the information we already know), and so it almost seems as if Eugenides and Attolia do not actually love one another. Then Eugenides almost gets killed, and the kiss they share is so charged and romantic, that the reader realizes they have always been like this, they’re just incredibly private—and very careful about who they invite into that confidence. Her additional work includes a short story collection titled Instead of Three Wishes, and a short story, "The Baby in the Night Deposit Box", published in a collection called Firebirds, edited by Sharyn November. "The Baby in the Night Deposit Box" was selected for The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror. She has also written six uncollected short stories — "Thief!", "Destruction", "Eddis", "Knife Dance, "Wineshop", and "Alyta's Missing Earring" — which are set in the world of The Thief. [9] Personal life [ edit ]Attolia: Sounis’s main rival in size and power, Attola is ruled by a queen and is inaccessible by land—except through the Eddisian path. Once upon a time, a debut author wrote a book about a thief, and that book was so good that it won the Newbery, spawned a series lasting over twenty years, and inspired an entire generation of fantasy writers you know and love. Your faves? Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Laini Taylor, Cassandra Clare… yeah, they’re all fans. Gen endures couple of beatings in prison and on the road with the magus. He kills enemies in a swordfight and feels bad about it. The group travels east into Eddis and then Attolia. The magus eventually reveal that he is searching for Hamiathes's Gift, which he hopes to use to convince the queen of Eddis to marry the king of Sounis. He believes that the Gift is hidden in a secret, nearly inaccessible temple hidden by the Aracthus river. Gen spends three nights searching the temple, and eventually realizes that there is a hidden room behind a wall of Hephestial glass. In the hidden room, the Old Gods appear before Gen, and he takes the Gift from the Great Goddess Hephestia. The in-universe play poking fun at Eugenides in Return of The Thief. By that point in the hypothetical series/franchise we would be in sore need of some levity, and what better way than the scathing parody figure of Emipopolitus? Once he has provided intel to the advisors, and comforted the queen that her time will come, Kamet gets to leave the capital for the town of Roa, to work as a scribe with a new sense of purpose as a free man… and to be with his new best friend Costis (!) after their incredible adventure. Make your guesses while reading this excerpt (with a mystery first-person narrator), and here’s the teasingly vague summary for Return of The Thief: This edition of The Thief includes an exclusive piece by Megan Whalen Turner about her inspiration for the setting of the story, an introduction to the characters from the world of the Queen's Thief, and a map of the world of the Queen's Thief.Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century. It’s not until Sophos gets him alone that he finally gets to glimpse Eugenides, with the two old friends getting only one private moment to plot how Sounis will earn the respect of his barons and fight off the latest Mede ambassador, Akretenesh. At the formal Barons’ Meet, Sounis watches with dismay as the majority of the barons vote to install an experienced regent to rule for him, effectively making Sophos the puppet ruler as they always intended.

Mythology: Attolia’s maid Phresine tells Eugenides and Costis about Klimun, the king who was warned by the gods not to lie by moonlight. When he is tempted to do so, only the actions of his slave-turned-friend stops him; though he perceives it as a failure, the goddess judges that he must be a good man, to have a friend who will look out for him so well. Obviously the aforementioned Hamiathes’ Gift reveal in The Thief, but I’m also super interested in seeing how Gen’s fight with the Attolian guard plays out. Hegoes into something of a fugue state while fighting, with the book cutting away from the action and only hinting (through the others’ impressed/horrified reactions) at the damage the skilled Thief dealt via the swordplay he so hates. Mythology: While Sophos’ stories are all epic poetry written by mortals, he does dream of the goddess Moira, who tutors him in what turns out to be Attolia’s library. Eddis, in turn, watches him in these dreams, which is how she knew he was alive. Megan Whalen Turner (born November 21, 1965) is an American writer of fantasy fiction for young adults. What makes it so devastating in The Queen of Attolia is how it’s almost a blink-and-miss-it moment—the adaptation wouldn’t have to make it any bigger than that, but it must be in there.
