The MIO Link optical wrist band, for example, is 10 hours. The optical Garmin 225 is about 7 hours. The Mio hasn’t got a screen and the Garmin doesn’t play music. MySports is based on the MapMyFitness system, meaning you can log in with an existing MapMyFitness account or export your data from MySports to the platform. Or, you can choose to export the data in a variety of file types if you can't directly upload to your preferred platform for whatever reason.

The answer to that may lie in the fact that it’s near-impossible to accidentally press the button. As such, the same controls have made a return for the forthcoming TomTom Runner 3. It still has a “Early Learning Centre: My First Sports Watch” vibe but does make navigating the menu system intuitive. So, when I say the quality is awesome I mean the non-TomTom bits that I used were awesome (including their headphones). Apparently it is complex to implement this over lots of smartphone types. All in all, the improvements made to the design are positive ones. The change from plastic to a rubber strap, however, does mean it’s the most comfortable to wear to bed and can get a little sweaty. The extra bulk means it’s not as sleek as the first Runner either. One of the biggest changes is the decision to put the controls on a separate four-way button below the watchface.

TomTom have again updated their successful RUNNER series of watches with the cunningly named RUNNER 3. There is a TomTom SPARK 3 which is essentially the same and is the only option available in the USA. The Spark 3 has different straps to the Runner 3. That’s all. It is very comfortable and you won’t notice it after while. I’ve been wearing it all night and day for 7 months, so it had to be good in this area. Activity monitor Race a custom activity – it lets you define a race – setting pace / time / distance – and displays your progress against that. (It’s like an option for a perfectly even pacer.) Just like the original TomTom watch, this is an entry-level device that offers more for the couch to half marathon runners, or first time marathoners, than the seasoned amateur looking to shave seconds off a personal best. TomTom Runner: Design and Build During an activity, the watch face displays the two measurements chosen in the activity settings at the bottom left and right. The main part of the display can be changed at any time, from all the usual pace, average pace, time, HR, distance and time of day. The buttons require a firm press to do anything, so it’s unlikely you’ll the wrong thing by accident.edit: I lost a fair amount of weight while marathon training and I have thin wrists. In the winter when there’s less blood flow, I found it tough to get the HRM to work consistently. In warmer months it was fine. If you have a small wrist, there is a small wrist band option. It helps being able to make it a little tighter in cold weather. The prior strap I had was on the tightest setting. Running cadence is unlikely to be included as a ‘live’ metric in the near future. Special Features – Other bits What you see on your TomTom Runner screen is customisable with seven options to choose from for both the top left and top right hand side. If you fancy an upgrade to your current TomTom you’ll probably buy one. If you love music when exercising you’ll be looking closely at this and wondering about ditching your smartphone. If you think there’s benefits to training by heart rate but just hate chest straps then you’ll be excited by the good oHRM in the TomTom Runner 3/Spark 3. If you ever consider doing a bit of exploring or following run routes you will be interested in the new navigational functions of the Spark 3/Runner 3. Yeah, it’s waterproof.
