About this deal

Should you add this to your collection? Sure. Alhambra is a decent game for newcomers and casual gamers because of all the reasons listed above. If you find your game nights skew more towards Le Havre and Dungeon Lords, Alhambra may not necessarily be for you, but you may find it worthwhile to hold onto for nights when you have rookies and non-gamer family over. After a player's turn is over any money cards and building tiles which have been removed are replaced with new ones so that there are always 4 of each. Some are very simple. For example, The Diamonds is basically a currency wild card and Vizier’s Favour allows you to play out of turn to grab a particular building that you want. The Change is another simple, but very useful addition. With it you receive currency coin(s) whenever you end up ‘over-paying’ to buy a building. These coins can then be used alongside your regular currency and often enable you to pay the ‘right money’ when buying a building and thus gain a bonus action. The Thieves adds 12 thief cards, which are given to the players at the start of the game. A player may play a thief card between turns (except before their own turn) and take a currency card matching the type of thief card played. This is where having those walled tiles comes in, because players receive extra points for every connected walled tile (emphasis on the connected, it helps to bridge those gaps). Alhambra: The Dice Game ( Alhambra: Das Würfelspiel, 2006) is a die-rolling game, broadly similar in play to Yahtzee. Like most tile games, the components for Alhambra are sturdy and durable. Since both the cards and tiles end up with a great deal of wear due to handling and playing, they are designed to hold up in the long run. The game boards are also of good construction, and the wooden player and score markers, while not remarkable, are very functional. Finally, there are some modules in the Alhambra Big Box which are a little more convoluted and cumbersome. For example, The Street Trader, which introduces citizens into your Alhambra and The Art of The Moors, which brings in culture. For me, these are a ‘step too far’. They add just too much complexity and take the game too far away from its core. Making Sense Of The Modules The points awarded to a player are recorded on the scoring board. Each player moves their counter one space forward for each point that they have been awarded. That, in a nutshell, is the Alhambra versus Alhambra Big Box conundrum. So What’s In The (Big) Box?Then put the piles on top on one another again with the fifth pile on the bottom, then the fourth, the third, the second and finally the first at the very top. The whole pile is then placed face-down next to the building market. This one requires patience as the more you play, the better you get at making those decisions. I personally find the scoring system a little frustrating, as it’s all too easy to be caught out with too few of certain colours, and unless you score consistently well on every round it’s easy to be left behind by other players. As a player who looks for an immersive theme that contributes well to game play, Alhambra leaves me wanting here. The theme is definitely pasted on, as I could very well be constructing a space station or a yacht or a modern city (in fact, Manhattan is a re-theming and re-release of Alhambra). The theme doesn’t add to the game play, nor does it distract from it: it’s just there. Draw currency cards from the currency market – either one card of any value or multiple cards totaling five or less. You must be able to reach each new building tile "on foot" from the starting tile without crossing a wall and without going off the tiles.

Other modules are slightly more complex. The City Gates, for example, allows players to place buildings in areas of their Alhambra that were previously unavailable to them. The City Walls is a useful tool for fixing holes in your city wall. This can be particularly beneficial later in the game. The Treasure Chamber adds treasure chests to the game. There are three treasure chambers, each containing four chests. At any point in the game players may buy the chests in one chamber, and place the chests on buildings in their Alhambra matching the colour of the chests. Players gain additional points for the number of chests in their Alhambra. The best master builders in the whole of Europe and Arabia want to demonstrate their skill. Employ the most suitable teams of builders and make sure that you always have enough of the right currency. Because no matter whether they are stonemasons from the north or horticulturalists from the south, they all want a proper wage and insist on their “native” currency. With their help towers can be constructed, gardens laid out, pavilions and arcades erected and seraglios and chambers built.
